

Edward passed away peacefully in the presence of family on February 12, 2014 at the age of 85 after a courageous battle with cancer. Edward was born on the family farm near Burr, SK on March 9, 1928. His youth was happily spent with his parents and many siblings in the small community. The importance of his faith was instilled in him as a youngster and never left him throughout his whole life. He learned how to work hard on the farm and carried that into his post- secondary education. Education was a passion of his as he obtained two degrees at the University of Saskatchewan and began teaching high school at the young age of 19. After seven years of teaching, Ed met his wife Lorraine in Jansen SK and married her in 1956. Ed started his family with Lorraine and by 1963 there was a family of 5 children to call his own. Ed was an educator at heart, he was a teacher, principal and director of education in a career that spanned 47 years. Lorraine passed away in 1996 and Ed remarried Rose Heck in 1999. They spent several years at Wakaw Lake and then his remaining years in Martensville. Edward is survived by his wife, Rose; his five children, son Byron (Lorna), son Brennan (Monica), daughter Celeste (Randy Greenwald), son Nathan, and daughter Lisa (Dwayne Pernitsky); grandchildren Christine, Adam, Aaron, Jennifer (Ryan Harberg), Joel, Jyllisa (Brady Wacker), Jesse (Andrea), Nolan, Meredith (Lance Bellanger), Dustin (Eloisa), Dylan, Justin (Lyndy), Lauren (Adam Lorenz), and Jillian (Tyler Bosch); great-grandchildren Raya, Isabel, Natalie, Sawyer, Lorraine, Edmond, George, Gage, and London; as well as his second family acquired from his marriage to Rose, Ramona (Merle Diederichs), Leona (Tim Vanpinxteren), Murray Heck (Pauline), Rene Heck (Linda), Brian Heck (Dawn), and Monique (Dale), and their children and grandchildren. Edward is also survived by sisters Clara, Helene, Chris, Marie (Benno), and Doreen, and sisters-in-law Johanna, Evelyn, and Marianne (Rod Leakey), and numerous extended family and friends. Edward is predeceased by his parents Charles and Helen Merkosky, his first wife Lorraine, his brothers Leo, Albert, and Bernard, his sister Bertha, his brothers-in-law Alfred Saretsky, Chester Dobni, Hugo Muench, Arnold Dust, and Jim Sotnikow, as well as Ian Heck. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 14th at 2pm at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Parish (114 Kingsmere Place Saskatoon). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Parish Building Fund, Martensville Saskatchewan.
