Garnet Gerald Smith was born in Moose Jaw, SK on September 25, 1952 to parents Lucille and John Smith, and was the first of two children.
Garnet grew up in Moose Jaw until moving to Saskatoon where he attended Bedford Road Collegiate, which is where he met the love of his life, Nancy Cameron. Garnet and Nancy were married on July 31,1970 and had 3 children who still live in the area. Immediately after high school, Garnet worked a variety of jobs until discovering work he truly enjoyed at the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan. He spent the rest of his career at the Cory potash mine, working in a variety of roles until his retirement.
Garnet had a deep love of history, particularly the Second World War and the battles that shaped Canada’s role in it. Part of that passion came from his father, who served in Italy as a radio operator and spotter with the 77th Field Battery. Garnet was a passionate sports fan, though his favorite team by far was the Saskatchewan Roughriders; he could list off a number of stories about every Roughrider season and was thrilled for their 5th Grey Cup win in 2025. That being said, the best stories always seemed to be from the good ol’ days of Ron Lancaster and George Reed. Garnet’s favorite pastime was being involved with his grandchildren. Whether sharing a game on TV, chasing them around the house, or proudly watching their activities, he was always right there, cheering them on.
Garnet is survived by his loving wife of nearly 56 years, Nancy; his children Dave, Carolyn and Teresa (Simon), his 4 grandchildren (Aiden, Everett, Emily and Benjamin), and his sister Linda (Clark). Garnet is predeceased by his parents, Lucille and John Smith and his nephew Tyler.
A celebration of life will be held for Garnet on June 25th, 2026 at 2pm at Mourning Glory – Acadia McKague's Funeral Chapel in Saskatoon. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
