August 13, 1960 ~ August 17, 2015
George was born and raised in the Arborfield, SK area and lived there most of his life. He was the fourth baby to Jim and Jean Childs, a position which eventually became the middle child of 7. As a boy George loved reading and playing with his siblings on the farm. He was a very gentle soul as a young man. He was kind to others and had compassion for animals and birds, which he knew a great deal about. George could win the heart of any adult. He disliked school and was much more comfortable anywhere else.
After school was over, he attended the Class 1A Driver Course at SIAST in Moose Jaw. In 1988, he married Susan Bishop of Crooked River. They moved around a bit for work but eventually back to Arborfield where they bought a home. They had two daughters. George worked as a long haul trucker and saw this continent from the driver’s seat. From hauling pecans out of the deep south, to supply trains over the ice roads of the far north, George made friends everywhere he went, but missed his family while on the road. Eventually he came home to haul for the Dehy plant in summer, and in winter to Alberta’s oil sands where he first became seriously ill.
In July of 2008, George underwent an extremely difficult double lung transplant. He was in the hospital for 10 months fighting for his life. During that difficult time, his dad Jim passed away suddenly. George’s life changed then as he was put in serious danger by any virus. He often kept to the protection of his home – he became an extremely good gardener and took on some renovations to his house.
He was a fierce fan of the Boston Bruins and the Saskatchewan Rough Riders. He loved watching the games and talking trivia. George also loved music and attended live events when his health permitted. The real joys in his life were his daughters, and just this spring he became a very proud grandfather. He was a man of limited means but was generous to a fault. He would always have time to talk, always had a story to tell, and was always glad to see you. He called his mom every day. George was a big advocate of family gatherings and was arranging a camping family reunion when his time ran out, far too soon, at only 55 years old, leaving us lost and broken hearted. There is no other person like him, his memory will live on in us forever.
George is survived by his wife Susan; daughters Jo-Anne and Taylor; and baby granddaughter Ava; his mother Jeannine Childs; his six siblings Ann Smith, Jay (Brenda) Childs, Cindy (Chris) Shea, Ruby Kilfoyle (Sterling Sklapsky), Vivian Childs (Greg Lange) and Jimmy (Loretta) Childs; he had five nephews, 4 nieces and had been made a great-uncle five times. He was predeceased by his dad James A. Childs in 2008; both grandparents George H. and Joann Childs (late of Arborfield); as well as Leo and Yvonne Soucy (late of Nipawin); aunt Ruby Edwards in 2008 and uncle Richard Soucy in 2013. Memorial Service for George has already taken place in Aborfield, SK on Saturday, September 12th, 2015.
