Gerald “Gerry” Wesley Bowers passed away peacefully on April 6, 2026, at the age of 73, leaving behind a quiet legacy woven from the gentle strings of a guitar and a lifetime devoted to sound.
Born in Edmonton on October 16, 1952, Gerry moved with his family to Saskatoon at the age of four — the city that would become the backdrop of nearly his entire life. He was a man of few words but great depth: thoughtful, unhurried, and deeply content in his own company and his music.
From the time he first picked up a guitar as a young man, music became the thread running through everything Gerry was and everything he did. He taught himself to play, and that self-taught spirit — patient, persistent, curious — stayed with him always. According to local historian Terry Hoknes, Gerry was considered one of the most respected and successful Saskatoon musicians playing in a series of popular bands from the mid-60s through the 80’s including Sunband. Produced by Randy Bachman, the band had a recording contract and released numerous records that were heard on local radio at the time. Though his years of performing were brief, they were the spark that lit a lifelong vocation. For the rest of his working years, Gerry channeled his love of sound into a quiet but skilled career — from repairing tube amplifiers to designing and installing complete sound systems. Outside of work, Gerry was a man who found peace in simple pleasures. He spent years in Saskatoon, with a chapter of his life in Vancouver as well, and in both cities, he enjoyed walking the paths along the water — unhurried, quiet, in his own world. He was one of the warriors who survived decades battling significant mental health issues and he is a shining example that taught us that family can get through anything when we have compassion and understanding in our care for one another.
Gerry is survived by his niece Lyndsay Arsenault, his Aunt Phyllis Bakke and Uncles Nick Stadnyk & Gord Fries, and many cousins and friends who remember him fondly. He was predeceased by his father, Donald Frederick Bowers; his mother, Mary Bowers Blumsom (née Stadnyk); and his brother, Kent Francis Bowers. He leaves no noise behind — only the memory of a man who spent his life quietly honouring his love of beautiful sound.
Rest in the music, Gerry.
