Gilbert Schafer

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gil Schafer. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 78 years of age. Gil fought a short, but courageous battle with cancer.

He is survived and will be deeply missed by his beautiful wife Marie, of 57 years; his children: Lisa (Tim) Nedila, Carol (Leigh) Klassen, and Bob Schafer; his grandchildren: Whitney (Colby), Nicole, Justin, Gracie and Kamryn; his great-grandchildren: Theodore and Louie; his brothers: Gerald (Lorraine) Schafer, Dennis (Marilyn) Schafer, Bill (Bev) Schafer, and Mel Schafer; his brothers and sisters-in-law: Shirley Cermak, Joe Seufert, Gayle (Pat) Hedley; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Gil was predeceased by his parents Ben and Caroline Schafer; his father and mother-in-law, Adolf and Ann Seufert; sisters and brothers-in-law: Phyllis (Lawrence) Richards, Elaine Seufert, Frank Cermak; and numerous uncles and aunts.

Gil loved his family very much. You could tell just by the way he lit up when he saw them. He would do anything for them. You were always greeted with a big smile and a warm and genuine hug. If we needed anything or needed to know about something, we always called Dad. We were very lucky to be able to call on him whenever we needed help. He was always there for us. Even the grandchildren called Grandpa first when they had questions. He had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He loved to tease and joke with them, especially now with them being all grown up. His eyes always lit up, and he had the biggest smile every time the two little great-grandchildren were around. He is truly going to be missed but never forgotten.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at St. Patrick’s Parish (3339 Centennial Drive Saskatoon, SK, S7L 6V4). Funeral arrangements entrusted to Mourning Glory Funeral Services.
