The young family moved to Saskatoon and had a home on Tucker Cres where many life-long friends were made. They left Saskatoon in 1973 and moved to Wood Mountain where they lived in and owned/operated the Trails End Hotel. Greg moved back to Saskatoon in 1977 at the start of the high school year, living with his Uncle Reg. The family soon followed making Trent Cres their home. Greg attended Evan Hardy Collegiate for highschool leaving 2 weeks shy of his grade 12 graduation. Jordan and Ashley both followed in their dad’s footsteps attending Evan Hardy and Greg was surprised to learn that the highschool had a second floor!
At 18 years of age, Greg started his employment with CP Rail where he worked until 2003, becoming an engineer. It was during the last few years on the railroad that Greg started Saskatoon Stucco and also got into used car sales, carrying on a family tradition. He started Mid City Auto Centre and continued at the helm of his successful car business until just this year when he decided to step back. Greg was pleased that Mid City would continue under the direction of Kevin McCaig. He continued to grace the doors of Mid City, stopping by to spread a little joy and sarcasm whenever he could. The car business was his life’s blood. Making a good deal always brought a smile to his face.
Throughout life, Greg enjoyed travelling. Hot holidays, a few cruises, World Juniors in Sweden and, of course, a multitude of trips to Las Vegas, Greg’s favorite destination. Claudia said they instilled a love of travel in Ashley and Jordan and often, even as adults, the kids would join Greg and Claudia on holiday trips. Now Ash and Caroline have become very welcome additions on these family trips. Greg also enjoyed the cabin at Whiteswan Lake and more recently the odd getaway to the cabin at Candle Lake.
Greg loved his home and family. He was a loving husband, a nurturing father, a good friend and neighbor, a helpful son, a fun uncle, a trusted brother and a great employer. Over the last week, the family has been inundated with messages advising how Greg helped many people in many different ways often referred to as a mentor. What a wonderful legacy!
Greg was predeceased by his father, Roger, brother-in-law Chris Genoway, sister-in-law Barbara Andreen, nephew Brett Genoway, grandparents Axel and Ragna Lindgren and John and Deana Moneo and his father-in-law Leonard Genoway. He leaves to mourn his wife of nearly 35 years, Claudia, daughter Ashley Florey (Ash), son Jordan (Caroline), his mom Vivian, brother Trevor, sister Heather Dillabaugh (Rick), nephew Austin (Leina, Billie, Alice), niece Quinn (Blake), mother-in-law Susan Genoway, Claudia’s brothers Clarence (Crystal) and Greg, sister-in-law Paula, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He also leaves behind Roxy, Angel, Woods and Ruger, the family pets.
Greg, when you get where you’re going, you’ll see your dad again, meet up with family and friends that you’ve been missing and get to meet Claudia’s Dad, Leonard Genoway, and Caroline’s parents Mike and Verna Grisdale.
Greg had a complicated medical history. For this reason, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the RUH FOUNDATION in Greg’s name; the hope being to help SHA get more extended length hospital beds so short guys like Greg can be more comfortable!
The Celebration of Greg’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at Lakeview Church (19 Glazier Road, Saskatoon). For those unable to attend please visit www.faithproductions.ca/livestream to view the service.
Take a page from the book of Greg: put on your Levi’s, shine up your car, and join us as we celebrate Greg.
If you wish to do something in Greg’s honor: the next time you are at Canadian Tire, buy something you don’t need that has a yellow tag!
In Ukrainian we would say “Vichnaya Pamyat”; loosely translated: “Forever Remembered”.
We’ll miss you, Greg!
As Greg would say: “Alllllrighty then….”
Arrangements entrusted to Travis Minor.
