Henry Anthony Szabo was born in Smeaton, Saskatchewan, on June 30, 1949. He was the youngest of seven children and spent his early years in Weirdale, SK, then Yellow Creek, SK, where he went to Stoneless School. He later moved to Saskatoon with his family, where he attended Walter Murray High School and Tec Collegiate. He was part of Saskatoon his entire life and passed away on October 24, 2026, at the age of 77.
Henry lived life on his own terms, finding contentment in the familiar comforts of home, the company of family and friends, and the simple pleasures of everyday life. He was an independent soul who valued his privacy and never felt the need to seek the spotlight. Those who knew him will remember his quiet nature, his witty humour, and the calm, reassuring presence he brought to those around him. He loved animals, the outdoors, plants, reading and journalling with his prized collection of fountain pens. His love for horses was amazing, and Max was his pride and joy in the riding ring, on trail rides, and in dressage shows.
From an early age, Henry displayed a natural talent for pencil drawing, particularly for animals. This artistic ability led him to an interesting career at Crest Craft, where he learned many skills, including hand sewing and finishing. His special drawing talent brought him to years of creating crests commemorating businesses, sporting events, and special life milestones. His work helped mark occasions that mattered to others, leaving a little piece of his artistry behind.
In 1981, Henry created Class A Monograms in Wonderbar Tack shop and later joined the Critters Pet Health Store becoming its resident expert. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and guiding customers toward the right food, clothing and toys for their beloved pets. His artistic eye and practical knowledge found a natural home in a career that brought together his interests and his appreciation for animals. He worked until he became ill for the first time in his life. During his sickness he often talked about getting back to work. He loved working; conversing in a wide variety of topics and constantly researching the world’s wonders through his trusty computer.
Henry was predeceased by his parents Mike and Elizabeth; and his siblings Mike (1979), Andy (2017), Eddie (2021 Betty (2023), and Olga (2025).
He is survived by his sister Helen; his sister-in-law, Hilda; and several nieces and nephews, who will remember him for his dry wit, gentle nature, and calming presence.
A special evening for sharing and telling stories will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as Critters (110 Ruth Street E #112, Saskatoon, SK) for all his customer friends. In keeping with Henry's wishes for simplicity and privacy, a private interment held at a later date.
