Howard Warner Read

Howard will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Claire; his son, Casper (Carly) and their twin sons, Oscar and Otis—who brought their grandfather endless happiness and immense joy; and daughter Julie (Joseph). He will also be missed by his siblings, Ella, Barbara, Muriel, Leona, and Richard, along with his extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Landon Read and Pearl Miller, and his brothers, Wilfred, Adam, and Beverly.

Howard was born on May 12, 1953, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He spent his early childhood on the family farm in Deer Ridge before the family moved to North Side in 1969. He attended school in Christopher Lake and later attended high school at the Prince Albert Technical High School (Carlton Comprehensive).

From a young age, Howard was known for his boundless curiosity. He was always asking questions and taking things apart just to see how they worked. As a youth, after an exposure to farm fertilizer led to health challenges and a long stay at Royal University Hospital, he proved his resilience and determination, even learning to outrun his siblings on crutches after breaking a leg.

Howard was a man of many talents and careers over the years. He drove dump trucks to build cabins around Christopher Lake, as well as agricultural fertilizer trucks, school buses, and city buses.

Entrepreneurial and skilled with electronics, he owned and operated a small electric repair shop on the 300 block of 13th Street East in Prince Albert, where his expertise even landed him on CTV News as a featured guest for "Ask the Expert."

A lifelong explorer at heart, Howard loved to take to the open road. In his younger adult years, he famously took a trip to Florida in his 1984 Volkswagen Jetta—a vehicle proudly kept in the family by his son. Above all, Howard was a devoted father who encouraged his children to try new things and strive for their best. Raising his family on MacArthur Drive in Prince Albert, he created lasting memories, including earning a local "Father of the Year" honor with a limo ride for the kids, and embarking on a memorable family trip to Disneyland and San Diego.

In his free time, Howard developed a deep passion for genealogy and family history, working closely with his mother to trace their heritage. He was proud to explore and preserve their Métis roots, as well as his father Landon’s family lineage connecting back to the United Empire Loyalists.

In his later years, Howard faced the gradual challenges of early-onset dementia. Though the condition proved to be a quiet and difficult struggle leading up to his passing, he met it with the same quiet strength he carried throughout his life. Howard resided at Herb Bassett Home and briefly at the Saskatoon Convalescent Home, and his family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at both facilities for the exceptional care, dignity, and kindness shown to him.

A private family gathering will take place at a later date, and Howard will be laid to rest at the Saint Christopher Cemetery (Christopher Lake, SK).
