Iris Sparrow

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Iris Sparrow on April 20, 2019, two days before her 80th birthday. She was born April 22, 1939 in Bradwell, SK to Eva and Duncan Blue. She was predeceased by her husband Bob Sparrow in 2008. Iris is survived by her son Garnet; siblings Alvena (aka Beanie), Clay, Janet, Emily and Norman; and in-laws Ada (Bud), Stuart, Ed, Don (Peggy), Kathy and Lori (Martin). Iris attended Queen Mary School in PA and Prince Albert Collegiate Institute. After Business College in PA she worked for People’s Credit Jewellers and later for Federated Co-op in Saskatoon. A Camp Christopher friendship with Bob Sparrow blossomed and they were married in 1962 settling in Saskatoon. Their son Garnet Kenneth arrived on November 30, 1968. They eventually moved from the city to their beloved acreage. Iris loved the peace and quiet in the country and enjoyed the songs of the many birds. Her garden was a joy to her and the prolific raspberries were shared with all. She was a member of the Personal Best group in Clavet for many years and we still value the cookbooks. When Bob passed away Iris was determined to stay on the acreage, and with the help of incredibly good neighbours who cleared snow, provided transportation and were always there for her, she did for several years. Iris had a strong faith and when she returned to Saskatoon she found fellowship and support at Louise Street Community Church. For the past few years Iris bravely fought cancer with amazing trust and acceptance. She seldom complained and endured each medical downturn as just one more step on her life’s journey. She was most grateful for the friendship of Joan Blair who helped in every possible way, as well as for Rick Glasel and the Altrogge family. She was thankful for the care of Dr. Haider, who monitored her journey with kindness and wisdom. Her family would like to thank the kind and compassionate staff at St. Paul’s Hospital who cared for Iris, especially Nurse Stephanie. The Funeral for Iris will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Louise Street Community Church (3042 Louise St.) in Saskatoon, with Pastor Steve Grove officiating.
