Full obituary to follow.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mother and Nana early Sunday morning, July 19th, 2026, at Saskatoon City Hospital.
Lois Marion Elder (nee Nordlund) was born on April 22nd, 1933, at Kamsack, SK, to Victor and Zoe Nordlund. She was the youngest of nine. Born during the dirty thirties to two school teachers and moved around the province a lot. Mom lost her own mother at the age of fifteen and had to grow up fast. After completing high school, she had to stay home to care for her father in Regina, who was blind.
Mom took a secretarial course and got her first job at Sask Power in 1953. After her dad remarried (Catherine Rogers), Mom was finally able to spread her wings and moved to Winnipeg and lived at the Y.W.C.A while working there.
Mom met her future husband while visiting her sister Wilda, who at the time was teaching in Simpson, and then married a local boy, Eldon Norum. Mom and Dad got married in Regina on July 5th, 1958, with her sister Enid as her bridesmaid. They proceeded to make their home on the farm where they raised Stewart (1959), Ross (1961), and Tanys (1973). In later years, they then resided in Saskatoon during the winter.
After Dad passed away in March of 2010, unfortunately Mom had a stroke 15 months later. She persevered and we didn’t give up on her and she didn’t give up either as she recovered remarkably well. Mom was well enough to spend thanksgiving at the farm but was no longer able to live alone. She lived at the Bentley and later the Riverside Terrace to be closer to her brother Hough and our Uncle Eldon and Mildred. She then moved to Warm and Cozy Care Home.
Lois was a devoted Wife, Mother, Nana, Sister and friend. She used her secretary skills at Simpson School as the secretary and librarian. She also used shorthand to disguise birthday and Christmas lists. Mom loved her role of mother and nana so much that she spent her years travelling back and forth from the farm to Saskatoon helping out with her grandchildren.
Mom loved to swim at the Y with her friends, enjoyed skating, sewing, writing letters, walking but usually with a dog, and baking smartie cookies. Mom loved getting together with all her sisters at family gatherings and I’m sure you could hear that Nordlund laughter for miles. Mom was a tireless volunteer with numerous church groups, her missions work collecting and sending packages of supplies to countries all over the world. She worked at the Ronald McDonald House in the front office and saw breast cancer patients at the clinic and the hospital to visit and pray with them as a survivor herself. Mom was always extremely generous with her time and money and always had a soft spot for the Saskatoon SPCA. After her precious Sheena passed, Mom fostered, walked and dog sat regularly. She loved music, plays, and the symphony. Mom was an avid reader which came from reading the Leader Post to her father from front to back.
Mom loved going to church and once she was no longer able to attend, she “religiously” watched Pastor Mark Hughes on T.V. She enjoyed her trips to Regina to see her sister Enid and her childhood friend Viv. She stayed at the family farm with Stewart and Tanys in Blaine Lake and Ross in Viscount. Mom was so grateful that she was well enough to attend the Nordlund family reunion last August at Manitou Beach to see her sister Enid and lots of cousins.
While in hospital, Mom was able to pet a dog one last time as Daisy was allowed to snuggle with her and keep Nana’s feet warm on the bed. Mom would always light up when Willow and Daisy would visit her at Warm and Cozy.
Mom will forever be remembered by her three children; Stewart (Char), Ross (Barb), and Tanys (Jason). Grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Josh (Ashley), Weston and Oaklyn. Kirsten (Bobby), Sof and Weston. Austin, Zoie, Anna, Ruby, Jennifer (Marc), Maya, Jourri, Shauna (Steve), Michael. Her beloved sister: Enid (Allan) and numerous nieces and nephews. And of course her childhood friend Viv.
Mom was pre-deceased by her loving husband Ken, which this past July 5th would have marked 68 years for him and his beloved “Sam”. Her parents; Victor and Zoe. Her sisters; Donna, Zoe, Wanda, Wilda and Iris. Her brothers; Hough and Vic, who she was very proud of for serving our country in WWII. Her stepmother; Catherine, and her special great-grandson Theo Banks Mclean, who she’s now holding in her arms for the first time.
In Lieu of Flowers, donations can be made in Lois’s name to the Saskatoon SPCA.
A private family service was held and Mom was laid to rest beside Dad at Nordal Cemetery, north of Simpson.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the Warm and Cozy Care Home staff for taking good care of Mom over the past years, and to City Hospital for the excellent care given and allowing Daisy to comfort her in her private room.
I’ll love you forever.
I’ll like you for always
As long as I’m living, my mommy you’ll be.
