Lois passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK at the age of 88. Lois was born August 22, 1933, at home on the farm Sec 15 - TP20 – Rge1 W3rd, RM of Eyebrow, Saskatchewan. She was the third child born to Alice Maud Birch and Walter Thomas Ewen Boan – with older sisters Hilda & Marjorie and younger brother Arnold. She attended school in Faulkton, Eskbank and Brownlee travelling by horse and buggy. After high school, Mom graduated from Providence School of Nursing in Moose Jaw – Class of 1955 and started her nursing career in Nipawin, SK. She was working in Outlook when she met a handsome Mountie, Al Hattie and fell in love and got married.
Mom and Dad moved to Calgary and then Edmonton in the next few years and son Blair and daughter Colleen arrived. In 1962 they settled in Saskatoon and added Brent and Linda to their family.
In Saskatoon Lois proudly worked as a Registered Nurse at St. Paul’s Hospital (Pediatrics Ward), and City Hospital on West 4 surgery. At the end of her career Mom was an evening supervisor at City Hospital. Mom’s many accomplishments include being one of the founding members of SUN (Saskatchewan Union of Nurses), and involvement with SRNA (Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association). She enjoyed attending many nursing reunions over the years. She helped to start the first babysitter training course, coached ball teams and volunteered in Palliative Care.
Mom and Dad opened Al Hattie Insurance in 1982 which now includes the fourth generation of family staff.
Family was so important to Mom and she helped to organize the Boan family history and newsletter as well as the annual Boan family reunion that brought so many of the extended family together each summer.
When Dad passed away in 2019, they had been married for 61 ½ years. Mom and Dad had lived in their house on Ruth St. for 57 years before moving to the Ilarion Residence in 2018. Mom spent the last 18 months at Stonebridge Crossing Retirement Community.
Lois was predeceased by her parents Walter and Alice Boan, husband Al Hattie, parents-in-law Russell and Florence Hattie, sister Hilda Thomas, brothers-in-law Elgan Thomas, Orval Rayner and Jim Hattie, son Blair Hattie, grandson Dylan Nahorniak.
She is survived by daughter Colleen (Gino) Nahorniak; Corinne (Tim) Bernes, Jasmine, Colton; Beth, Gaius, Camilo; Rochelle, Brooklyn, Kashton, Max; Teralyn, King. Son Brent (Debbie) Hattie; Jason, Kevin, Lee. Daughter Linda (Rod) Karlenzig; Broderick (Juliana), Bryce. Sister Marjorie Rayner; brother Arnold (Adeline) Boan; brother-in-law Richard Hattie and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at Acadia McKague's Funeral Chapel (915 Acadia Drive, Saskatoon). On Sunday, February 13, 2022 at 11 a.m. Donations may be made in Lois’ name to the Kinsmen Telemiracle Foundation, 2217C Hanselman Court, Saskatoon, SK S7L 6A8.
