Marilyn was born to James and Simone Gibson in The Pas, MB on November 26, 1939. Four years later, the family expanded with the addition of Elizabeth Margaret. At the age of 8, Marilyn’s family moved to Red Deer, AB, where she lived until she went to the School of Agriculture in Olds. She then attended Holy Cross School of Nursing in Calgary. In 1965, she moved to Eston, SK to nurse full time. While living there she met Leonard, whom she married in 1971, and they moved to Saskatoon the following year. Marilyn nursed at City Hospital for 4 years, and then she happily took time off to have a family.
James was firstborn and he was followed by Christine 2 years later. The children were Marilyn’s dream brought to life and she poured her time and love into them. She began nursing again in 1981 when she joined the staff at Sherbrooke Nursing Home, where she felt like she was fulfilling her calling. She nursed there until her retirement.
Her summers were spent tending to her garden and flowers, along with going on camping trips. She loved sitting on the deck with a good book and glass of iced tea to enjoy her beautiful yard. In the winter, her reading moved indoors and she enjoyed feeding the birds on the deck so she could watch them. Her children were the highlight of her life and she was thrilled when both James and Christine married and had their own children. Time spent with family was always her happiest moments and she treasured every minute with them.
Marilyn’s quick smile and understanding nature created deep relationships with those lucky enough to be in her life. She was a fountain of strength for family and friends going through hard times and was always there to celebrate even the smallest of successes. After listening patiently, Marilyn always had supportive words and loving advice. Whether the news being shared was that of sadness or celebration, you could always count on Marilyn to give you her full attention and support. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her.
Marilyn is survived by her loving husband Leonard; her son James (Tanya) and daughter Christine Veikle (Jason); as well as her grandchildren River, Willow, Emerson, and Ella.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday July 13, 2024 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church (217 Lenore Drive, Saskatoon, SK).
Arrangements entrusted to Mandi Wasylkowski.
