Marvin was born on November 28, 1931, in Canora, SK, to Arthur and Josie Simes. Canora, which got its name from the first two letters of the words, Canadian Northern Railway, would, unknowingly, paint an early picture of how much the railway would later echo in Marvin's life. Marvin grew up with two brothers and one sister in the Sturgis district where he started his schooling. After moving to a farm outside Ketchen, SK, Marvin completed his final year of formal schooling at Robinson Creek School. With school behind him, Marvin began working in the logging industry in SK which eventually took him out to BC. He missed his family immensely while working away and that was a driving force in his move back to SK. His natural ability to operate any type of machinery, and the summers at home on the farm, lent him the know how to start a new career in heavy equipment operating. His new career path prompted a move to Regina, SK where he lived and worked until 1960. In 1961, he married Sheila, in Ketchen, SK, and they moved to Cardston, Alberta where he worked with heavy machinery on the building of a new dam. While in Cardston, they had their first son, Ken, in 1962. His next move, with his new family in tow, to work with Patrick Pipeline as a backhoe operator installing water and sewer lines, in the now booming Saskatoon, would prove to be their last big move. Settling down in the heart of Saskatoon, they soon welcomed three more boys, Tom, Randy and Barry. They would call their family complete, with the addition of Vernon, a few years later. In 1970, he began working for CP Railway as a Carman, working four years to achieve the title of Master Carman, where he would work until his retirement in 1996 after 26 years. His favorite job as a Carman with CP was utilizing his heavy equipment operating background, working as their Heavy Lift Crane Operator at train wreck sites. Marvin's children, and later grandchildren and great-grandchildren, were always a huge part of his life and would forever bring a smile to his face as he would to theirs. Marvin passed away on December 20, 2015, at the age of 84, leaving behind his loving wife, four sons, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Marvin was predeceased by his beloved son, Barry; mother and father; brothers, Gordon and Ken; and sister, Lyla.
