

Mary Borstmayer (Schmoeller) was born in Leofeld, SK. on January 24, 1920. In her late teen years, she worked as a housekeeper and caregiver on a neigbouring farm for Mike Borstmayer, his wife who was suffering from cancer and their four young children. During the early war years Mary followed her sister Cecile and her husband Pete to Geraldton, ON and then to Vancouver in 1940. In Vancouver she worked at a plywood mill then at St. Paul’s Hospital. In August of 1948 she married Mike Borstmayer, whose wife had died in 1945, and moved to his farm in Naicam, SK. Together they raised Mike’s three boys and one daughter and had three additional boys. They moved to Saskatoon in 1957 where Mary was active with the CWL and did volunteer work for the mentally handicapped. Reading, playing cards and knitting were her favorite hobbies. Mary and Mike had an active social life centered around St. Joseph’s parish, the CWL and Knights of Columbus.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Mike, parents Egid and Lucy Schmoeller, brothers Mike, Joe and Rupert; sisters Barbara and Cecile; children Annella and Florian; her son-law-Edward and daughter-in-law Elizabeth. She is survived by her children Desmond (Lori), Ralph (Helen), Bruce (Chris), Rod (Lilian) and Jeff (Janet), her daughter-in-law Gladys, her sister Anne as well as more than 35 grandchildren and great grandchildren
A Vigil of Prayer will take place on Wednesday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. and the Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Thursday, October 11 at 10:00 a.m., both services from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church (Broadway and 8th Street). Cremation. Committal at St. Boniface Parish Cemetery, Leofeld, SK.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated .
