Melissa was born on May 23, 1994, at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to Glenn and Daphne (née Materi) Stroeder. As the youngest child and only girl, Melissa was fiercely loved and defended by her older brothers Stephen, Michael, and David.
She attended Cardinal Leger School for her elementary years, and Holy Cross High School for her teenage years, although she never formally graduated Grade 12. Knowing she had to rectify this, Melissa enrolled in SIAST in order to obtain her GED, convincing her dad to come along with her and obtain his as well, graduating November of 2019.
After leaving High School, Melissa joined her mom, dad, and older brother Michael working at Canadian Tire. She then went on to start her career in the house cleaning business, finding various companies to work for, as well as working for herself. Melissa enjoyed this work, as she got to help the people who needed it, with the added bonus of getting to play with any pets the clients had. She also earned a Diploma to become an Eyelash Technician, and enjoyed making her clients beautiful.
Melissa absolutely loved animals, particularly dogs. She loved to dogsit and catsit for everyone she knew (even lizardsitting once!). Sophie, the family dog that they had since Melissa was 19, was her beloved companion, often accompanying her on walks and accepting snacks that Melissa was more than happy to provide. Melissa was devastated when Sophie passed away in March of 2026, and always kept a photo of Sophie attached to her necklace, close to her heart.
Christmas, being her favorite holiday, gave her great joy in helping her dad to decorate the house and yard. We are sure with all of the lights and decorations that she insisted be set up, that people up in space could see it! Another fun pastime was dressing Sophie up in Christmas costumes, which Sophie begrudgingly accepted.
Above all else, family was the most important thing to Melissa. Loving nothing more than spending time with both her immediate and extended family, taking roughly 7 bajillion photos each time. Every day, she would have a photo memory to share with her family, commemorating the fun times they had had. Her ideal vacation was spending time with family camping out at Pike Lake, especially with her nieces and nephews. Having roaring campfires and spending time at the beach to swim and work on her tan was, in her mind, the best way to spend her summer. She had fond memories of her visits to Nova Scotia, collecting beach glass and catching up with family and friends that live out there.
Melissa lived a life of love. Her message to us is “Love those whom God has given to you with your imperfect hearts – for your imperfect love is a reflection of God’s perfect, unconditional love for us.”
Melissa is lovingly remembered by her parents Glenn and Daphne, older brothers Stephen (Angelina), Michael (Alexis), and David, along with her nieces and nephews (Treven, Kevin, Eli, Arianna, Aubree, Cooper, Walker, and Scarlett).
Melissa was predeceased by both her paternal and maternal grandparents, as well as various aunts, uncles, cousins, and beloved family dogs Sophie, Buddy, and Coco.
