Myrtle was born on the family farm near Climax, SK. The third of Ole and Olive Mything’s four children, she was a sister to Kenneth, Orvil, and Allan. She attended Plateau School, a one-room country school, then high school in Climax and Shaunavon. After finishing Grade 12 she attended Balfour Technical School in Regina, where she studied accounting, office management, typing, and shorthand. Her first job was that of secretary to the manager of the Canadian Westinghouse Company. It was while living and working in Regina that she met her future husband, Grant. They were married in 1951. From Regina they moved to Moose Jaw. Once the children were all in school, Myrtle returned to work at the Saskatchewan Technical Institute (STI) as a clerk/stenographer in the Registrar’s office. Having enjoyed being a Girl Guide herself, she started a company for girls in the family’s neighbourhood, continuing on as a leader until 1970, when the family moved to Saskatoon. Myrtle was pleased to be granted a transfer from STI in Moose Jaw to STI in Saskatoon, where she worked for a time before joining Grant in operating their business, “Fashion Rite Sewing and Fabric Centre,” in Market Mall. Another move occurred in 1978, this time to Medicine Hat and the “Dixon Sewing Centre.” They returned to Saskatoon in 1987, continuing to be involved in the sewing machine business until retirement. Myrtle enjoyed sewing and quilting, tending to her plants and flowers, cooking and baking, playing Whist, travelling, and entertaining family and friends. She especially relished her trips to the farm. She was passionate about documenting her family’s history, through both words and photos, in order that it be passed on to future generations. Myrtle was a long-time member of the Coronary Artery Rehabilitation Group (CARG), she belonged to the Brubyen Lodge of the Sons of Norway, and was a member of St. Martin’s United Church, where she loved being involved in the garage sales and the Ministry By Phone. She will be remembered for her warm smile, her willingness to help others, and her unwavering devotion to family and cherished friends. For the past two years Myrtle resided at Preston Park 1. The family will forever be grateful to its caring staff.
Myrtle was predeceased by her husband, Grant, in 2008 and her son, Bill, in 2017. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Marlene (Pat) Wickenhauser of Regina and Dianne (Ron) Freilinger of Saskatoon, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, her brother, Allan Mything of Climax, cousins in Norway, nieces, nephews, and friends.
