Ron passed away Thursday, May 28, 2020 at St. Paul’s Hospital, with his wife Judy by his side.
Ron was born March 25, 1944 in Saskatoon to Jesse and Dmytro Halabura. He grew up on the farm in the Laniwci district west of Alvena. The farm was on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, so Ron had many fond memories of exploring the land and the riverbanks, searching for historical artifacts and enjoying nature. He often spoke of the gathering of family and friends at their home, hanging out with cousins and local friends. This was an opportunity he also gave his sons by setting up weekend retreat on the farm.
After graduating from high school he began working for SaskPower, gaining his Journeyman Pipefitter Certificate in 1968. After our marriage in August of that year, we made our home in Saskatoon, where our son Kelly was born in 1970. Shortly after, Ron joined Honeywell International in Toronto, Ontario. After making homes in Ontario and Manitoba, where our second son Curtis was born in 1973, Ron was transferred back to Saskatoon in 1978. In 1988 he joined the Saskatchewan Health Region in the Energy Department at St. Paul’s Hospital, later joining the team at Saskatoon City Hospital as Controls Technician and retired in 2009, a retirement well-earned after 47 years. As an accomplished tradesman he had sought to learn everything he could about the trades, a useful tool which he used throughout his life, as well as after retirement.
He was known for his extensive knowledge and his ability to use that knowledge in all that he did. His memory extended to every joke that he had heard or read and relayed those jokes to any receptive audience. His surrogate grandchildren quickly learned to have a joke ready to share with him.
Ron was predeceased by his sons, Kelly and Curtis, his parents, his in-laws Elvis and Folke Strinholm, nephew Joshua Paskiw, brother-in-law Gerald Strinholm and special friend Dennis Schow. He will be dearly missed by his wife Judy, his brothers and sisters-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews and their children, whom he loved and cherished. He will also be missed by his extended family, his former colleagues at City Hospital, all his childhood friends and a host of friends across Canada, the USA and Australia.
Ron’s favourite answer was “I’ll get to that next week”, so go to YouTube, find the song “In a Week or Two” by Diamond Rio (one of our favourite songs) and while listening, raise a glass in his memory.
For those who wish to make a donation in Ron’s memory, please consider any of the Saskatoon Hospital Foundations or a charity of your choice.
Judy would like to thank everyone who has reached out with love and support during this difficult time.
