in the early hours of May 11, 2024 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon.
Rose began her life in Revenue, Saskatchewan on February 18, 1932 to proud parents Joseph Michael and Maria (neé Adam) Weimer.
Rose and younger brother Tony had a happy childhood growing up in Revenue and Saskatoon.
Rose always spoke very lovingly of her parents.
She was a very protective sister to her younger brother. One family memory recounts a story when an older boy threatened to beat up the then seven year old Tony and Rose wasn’t having any of that. Determined to protect Tony, she stepped in and …. needless to say - there was no beating.
One of Rose’s favorite pastimes, even as a young girl, was shopping. The story goes that one day, while their father was at work at the University and their Mother busy with household chores, a nine year old Rose took her little brother Tony by the hand and walked with him from their home in the South side of the City all the way across the bridge downtown to a department store. Luckily, somebody recognized the two youngsters and took them back home to their surprised mother, who had not even noticed their absence.
On May 26, 1956, Rose married Wayne Everett Douma. They had two children, son Allan and daughter Adèle.
After Wayne’s passing in 1964, the young family lived in Saskatoon, Rosetown and Estevan, before settling permanently in Saskatoon.
Rose worked at the Saskatchewan Veterinary College as an office clerk, which she really enjoyed… she had always been good with numbers and took pride in accounting for every penny and keeping the books balanced. She also worked at the U of S Administrative building for a few years. In her later years, she worked at the Ramada and Hilton Hotel in the banquet hall.
Rose enjoyed music, especially country western songs, she even played the accordion in her younger years. She was also an accomplished dancer and loved to dance at Manitou Danceland and at the Legion Hall.
After the children had grown up, she married Richard Neve in 1979, who passed away on September 16, 2007.
Over time, the family grew and five grandchildren and three great grandchildren were added.
A highlight of her life was a trip to Germany with her son, Al. They travelled to Bavaria and the Black Forest. Another trip was to Nashville with a friend.
Rose had a sweet tooth and the family always made sure that there was dessert at family gatherings, where she was known, on occasion, to pull out one of her famous joke books.
Rose was a very generous lady who sent donations to her church and numerous charitable organizations. She had a witty sense of humour and liked to make people laugh and smile.
In November of 2010 she married John Gessell and they made their home in downtown Saskatoon, where they resided until her passing.
Rose is missed and remembered by her family; husband John, son Al (Uli) with Christina (Kris) and grandchildren Chase, Cahlia and Cyndal, Caroline (Jesse), Crystal (Jacob) and Wayne, daughter Adèle and grandson Grant, her brother Tony (Velma). She will be in our hearts forever.
We wish to express our special thanks to the doctors, nurses and medical staff at St. Paul’s Hospital. They were wonderful and made Rose’s last days comfortable. We could not have asked for better care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA.
Celebration of life with interment will be announced at a later date.
