It is with great sadness that the family of Shirley Lois McFadyen announces her sudden passing on June 2, 2026, at the age of 83 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones at St. Paul’s Hospital, and is now reunited with her late husband, Roderick Dormer McFadyen.
Shirley was born on December 10, 1942, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to Paul and Helen Ouellette. She grew up in Saskatoon with her siblings Gloria, Jackie, Marlene, Doreen, Lucille, Doris, Richard, Laverne, and Gordie. She attended St. Mary’s School, St. John Bosco, and Tech Collegiate.
Shirley and Roderick McFadyen were married in 1965 in Saskatoon and began starting their family. She spent many years at home raising her 4 children Scott, Lori-Ann, Gregg and Colin while the family lived in Massey Place. In 1979, they moved to their current family home in Fairhaven.
Rod and Shirley’s love for their family and friends was extraordinary. They were always there to care for and support them in any way they could. They faithfully supported all their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their sports — from hockey and slow-pitch to soccer and dance — often cheering them on from the stands with loud encouragement. Shirley tragically lost her husband Roderick to cancer in 2017, but she carried on with the same strength and grace she had always shown.
Shirley worked at Adilman’s Department Store, the Sheraton Cavalier, CPN Broadcasting, the Métis Society, and later at Saskatchewan Social Services, from which she retired. Her dedication, caring nature, and kindness were a great benefit to her clients at Social Services, and she was known for going above and beyond to help them.
Her faith in the Catholic Church was unwavering, and she found peace in her many visits to St. Mary’s Church, St. John Bosco, and St. Patrick’s Church. Her strong faith guided her through life’s challenges and was passed on to her children.
Shirley’s strength was impressive. She was known for standing up vigorously for what she believed in. Her character touched everyone she met, and her love, wisdom, strength, sense of humour, and deep faith will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her. She will always hold a special place in our hearts.
Shirley is survived by:
- Her son Scott McFadyen and his four boys.
- Grandson Dillon McFadyen and Beth, and great-grandchildren Aubryn and Carson.
- Grandson Brody McFadyen and April, and great-grandchildren Logan and Mason.
- Grandson Brighton McFadyen and Raylene, and great-grandchildren Wyatt, Walker, and Quinn.
- Grandson Connor McFadyen.
- Her daughter Lori Giesbrecht (née McFadyen).
- Her son Gregg McFadyen.
- Her son Colin McFadyen and granddaughters Lola and Annelise.
She was predeceased by her son-in-law Larry Giesbrecht; her parents Paul and Helen Ouellette; her brothers Gordie and Richard; and her sisters Doreen and Lucille.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Shirley Lois McFadyen at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2026 at St Mary’s Parish (211 Avenue O S., Saskatoon). Lunch to follow immediately after the service. Rite of Committal will take place at a later date.
