August 12, 1915 - August 20, 2014
“ I am too old to die young” is the response he would quip when asked how old he was. Last week Steve celebrated his 99th birthday. Death took him quietly on August 20th. His body was worn out. Born on the homestead in the Tramping Lake, SK area, Steve was the second of twelve children. He worked at home on the farm until he was old enough to hire out to other farmers in the area. While working on one of these farms he met Margaret Merk. They married in 1941. They built their home in Broadacres, SK where they farmed and raised four children, Richard, Dianne, Edward and Robert. To supplement the farm income Steve worked as a hired hand for other farmers. As well, he and the family took on the job as caretaker for Broadacres School. In the late 60's they moved to Kerrobert where Steve worked as custodian at the Pioneer Haven until he retired at age 65. In his late 80's he moved into St. Anne’s Place in Saskatoon, followed soon after by a move to Columbian Manor. He lived his last few years in long term care at the Sherbrooke Community Center. He is predeceased by his wife, Margaret; son, Robert; grandson, Timothy Peacock; his parents, Frank and Katherina (Veran); siblings, John, Mary, Frank, Katy, Tony, Kasper, Nick and brothers-in-law, Lambert Heit, George Johns and Valentine Volk. He is survived by his children, Richard (Marguerite), Dianne Peacock, Edward; Robert’s wife, Marilyn; grandchildren, Kent (Andrea), Gaylene (Justin), Sara, Melissa (Mike), Carlee, Curtis, Nicholas, Matthew; great grandchildren, Nathan, Kolton, Alec, Madeline; siblings, Eleanor, Jean, Helen (Edmund) Natski, Veronica (Emmanual) Bertsch and brother-in-law, Denis Genest. Steve travelled with Margaret to visit other in-laws and their families, Bernard & Betty Merk, B.C., Joe & Betty Merk, B.C., and Katherine & Allen Walker, ON.
