Terry was born in Outlook, SK, on September 27, 1962, to Jim and Ruby Cuming. Her family lived in Hudson Bay, SK and Kamloops, BC before settling in Rosetown, SK in 1977, where she attended Rosetown Composite High School. She later earned her secretarial certificate from Saskatoon Business College. Terry met Scott Garrett at a young age, and they married in 1983. Together they spent more than 20 years raising their family in Kindersley, where they welcomed daughter Alysha in 1985 and son Dustin in 1988. Countless hours were spent at rinks and activities supporting their children, a dedication that would later extend to the next generation. Terry built a respected career spanning more than 40 years in banking and financial services, including roles with CIBC, Farm Credit Canada, and most recently McGregor Financial. Whether at work, at home, or in her community, Terry approached everything she did with dedication, generosity, and a remarkable work ethic. Those who knew her would agree that no one worked harder than she did. In 2014, Terry moved to Saskatoon to be closer to family, where her grandchildren became the centre of her world.
Terry could always be found in the stands cheering on her grandchildren, who were the light of her life. Rain or shine, she was front row at football, hockey, baseball, cheer, and any other activity her grandkids were involved in. Terry was the kind of grandma where you didn't need to pack a bag for her house. She was always prepared with pyjamas, toothbrushes, highchairs, crafts, games, and the little things that made her grandchildren feel right at home. Being a grandma was her greatest joy.
Terry was deeply involved in her community and always found ways to give her time, energy, and heart to others. She volunteered through her church, managed her son's hockey teams, served as a board member with the Jr. Klipper’s, billeted hockey players, and supported numerous community initiatives, always finding a way to help others and make a difference. Terry regularly welcomed her children's friends into her home for a meal, a listening ear, or a safe place to land. She was "Mama Terry" to many more than her own children. Giving back was simply part of who she was, and her generosity and kindness touched countless lives.
Terry leaves behind her children, Alysha Robb (Taylor; children Aria and Brody) and Dustin Garrett (Natalie; children Blake and Brooke); her sister, Gerri Harvey; Scott Garrett (Lorrie) and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was predeceased by her mother, Ruby Cuming (July 1991); father, Jim Cuming (November 1996); Grannie Helen Close (June 2004); and brother-in-law, Craig Harvey (October 2024).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 9 at Knox United Church, 838 Spadina Crescent East, Saskatoon, SK at 2:00 pm. A private interment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Terry's memory to Ronald McDonald House Charities Saskatchewan, where she loved volunteering and supporting families when they needed it most.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Royal University Hospital, especially the teams in the Oncology and Intensive Care Units, for the care and compassion they provided to Terry.
Terry will be deeply missed and forever loved.
