Tony passed away in Saskatoon with family by his side and fortified by the last rites of the Church. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Maureen (née McGuigan) in 1983; his parents William (1946) and Gertrude (1953); his sister Nora (1989); Maureen’s parents Davina (1999) and Bill (2000); niece Catherine McGuigan (2009); and cousin David Wood (2014). He is survived by his children Christine (Mark Kindrachuk; Julia, Max), Fiona (Rob Degenstein), Brendan, Alison (Eric Gudmundson; Iain, Owen), Angela (Sean Goddard; Cecelia), and Sean (Ashleigh, Anthony, Adeline, Davina, Emily). He is also survived by numerous relatives in the UK including brothers-in-law Gerard and Brian and their families; and cousin Barbara Wood (Geoff) and family. Tony was born in London, England. He lived through the Depression, the bombardment of London in WWII and was then conscripted into the R.A.F. in 1947 and stationed at Singapore at the start of the Malayan Emergency. Tony and Maureen met at Youth Club at St. Peter-in-Chains R.C. Church in Hornsey, London, and were married there in 1955. A 1952 graduate of St Mary’s College, University of London, Tony taught in London until 1957 when he and Maureen joined those recruited to Saskatchewan to address the province’s teaching shortage. They staffed a two-room school in Ormiston, moving to Saskatoon in 1961 where Tony completed his B.Ed. and began a 28 year career teaching English at Bedford Road and Mount Royal Collegiates. In addition to coaching high school soccer teams and directing school plays, he was president of the Saskatchewan English Teachers’ Association and taught curriculum studies at the College of Education. He completed his M.A. in Geography in 1979. From 1991 to 1993 he taught in Awassa, Ethiopia with Volunteers in Christian Service. Tony appreciated the support of all those who shared his passion for social and restorative justice. As volunteer Director of the Office of Justice and Peace for Saskatoon’s Roman Catholic Diocese, he reached out to groups including Development and Peace, Save the Children, KAIROS, the Anti-Poverty Coalition, the Community First Development Fund and Station 20 West. He was also involved in ecumenical events like the outdoor Way of the Cross and multi-faith prayers for peace at New Year’s. Tony’s children and grandchildren remember his interest and pride in all their accomplishments and travels, his fine wit, his love of Brahms and Beethoven, his garden, his devotion to the Virgin Mary, and his joy in receiving daily Eucharist. Heartfelt thanks to his dear friends and colleagues for their love and support since Tony became ill in 2011. Sincere gratitude to staff at the Bentley, Prairie Spring Care Home, Trinity Manor and Stensrud Lodge. We are especially grateful to Father Nestor Gregoire OMI for his pastoral care. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 20, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church (corner of 8th Street and Broadway) in Saskatoon. If so inclined memorial donations may be made to Station 20 West. Arrangements in care of John Schachtel - Mourning Glory Funeral Services (306) 978-5200.
