Alexis was a pillar of strength, generosity, and leadership in her community. She devoted most of her life to working for Garden River First Nation, where her dedication, spirit, and work ethic were unmatched. She was passionate about First Nations land rights, stewardship, and sovereignty, and was a fierce advocate for her people. After graduating from the Forestry Technician Program at Sault College in 1991, she began her career with the North Shore Tribal Council, later spending many meaningful years managing Ojibway Park. Alexis was a driving force in the Lands and Resources Department in Garden River, where she was respected as a knowledgeable leader and tireless defender of the land. She continued her education, earning a Certificate in Indigenous Peoples Resource Management from the University of Saskatchewan in 2014.
Alexis believed in community and service. She served bravely as a Volunteer Firefighter in Garden River, earning Firefighter of the Year. She was instrumental in starting Garden River Bingo, creating long-lasting community support and connection. Alexis was deeply involved in Indigenous activism and rights advocacy, always standing firm for what was just and fair. Since 2018, she was also a proud and active member of the Echo Bay Elks Lodge #535. In every role she held, both professionally and personally, Alexis excelled “in leaps and bounds,” always raising others up with her.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and care staff at the Sault Area Hospital 3rd floor, and ARCH for their exceptional care and compassion.
