Ernie was born on January 26, 1939, in Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. He immigrated to Canada at the age of nine, learning early on the value of hardwork and what it meant to provide for those he loved.
A dedicated family man through and through, Ernie leaves to mourn his beloved wife, Judy (née Marshall), with whom he shared an amazing 68 years of life and marriage. He was the devoted father of Charles (Donna); loving grandfather to Donna Duplin (Laurent) and Anna Tupling (Ben); and cherished great-grandfather to Julianne Duplin (Daniel), Sarah Flood, Meghan Flood (Dylan), Hope Tupling and Grace Tupling.
He is survived by his sister Frances Messore (late Duilio) and his brother Rene (Wilma), and was the fun-loving brother-in-law to Esther Jussila (late Eric).
He is predeceased by his parents, Rosa and Victor; his brothers, Giuseppe (Emma) and Mario (Susan); and his special uncle, Vincenzo. He will be greatly missed by many nephews and nieces.
Ernie built a well-known reputation in the local culinary community, working his way through various positions before taking ownership of his first restaurant, the Princess Sandwich Bar. In October of 1971, he opened the doors to the iconic Ernie's Coffee Shop. For decades, he poured his heart into feeding people good food and building lasting friendships until he finally hung up his well-worn apron in February 2020.
An avid boxer in his youth, Ernie later spent many years spending his Saturday evenings at the bowling alley. A natural storyteller, he captivated friends and family and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
