Charlotte Irene (Kaufman) Rice

Thank you for coming to this celebration of life. We are here to pay tribute to a faithful wife a devoted mother a cherished grandma and great grandma, a sister, daughter, auntie, and loyal genuine friend. Charlotte Irene Rice was all these things and so much more.

Time would never allow me to speak at length on the entirety of the pure life my grandma lived. Knowing Grandma for only 41 years {less than half of her life}, I can only relate in part. Many of you have known Irene for much longer and could expound much better than I on the beauty, grace, elegance and humility with which Charlotte lived her precious life.

Of all the things that were amazing about my grandma three virtues above others have stood out to me as I reflected on my Grandma’s legacy. Virtues that no doubt every person within the sound of my voice could testify to in their own personal way. They are the virtues of Faith, Hope and Love.

Romans 5:1 says Therefore having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

It would be impossible, as you well know, to talk about Charlotte without talking about her faith. For her faith in Jesus Christ was the crux in who she was and the reason she was filled with Hope and Love.

Faith

The Bible says in Matthew 17:20 That if you have faith of a mustard seed you will say to this mountain move from here to there and it will move.

We may never know this side of glory how many mountains were moved or how many lives were forever changed by the faith of Irene. I can say however, with great certainty that your lives and mine are richer, fuller and forever changed for the better for having known Charlotte and the faith that sustained her.

Charlotte's faith was placed completely in the person of Jesus Christ and his finished work on the cross. For it was Gods love for us manifested in the person of Jesus that formed the foundation of her faith.

John 3:16 & 17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.

Friends and family never get the idea that God does not love you. He so loved you that he sent his only son Jesus to pay the ultimate price, to give his life as a ransom for all. This was the foundation for Charlotte's faith.

Hope

Romans 5:5 says Now hope does not disappoint because the love of God.

Has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Ghost who was given to us.

In the same way that Jesus was the foundation of Charlottes faith. The resurrection of Jesus was the foundation for her hope.

For Jesus not only died for our sins but after three days rose again, conquering death and hell leading captivity captive. In so doing Jesus demonstrated his power over death and offers eternal life to all those who believe in him.

It was because she accepted the free gift of salvation that she could look forward to the future with unwavering hope. It was the security of knowing that because her lord Jesus had conquered death that he would one day raise her from the dead to eternal life, a life beautiful, immortal, incorruptible. Hope does not disappoint.

Love

The love which grandma lavished on everyone she came in contact with instantly brought a feeling of joy and peace. Grandma had a genuine love for people, a true servant’s heart, which caused her to labor long for the good of others.

You didn’t have to spend much time with grandma before you realized this is truly a woman who was full of love. The first indication was her glowing reassuring smile, then the sparkle in her crystal-clear blue eyes, her soft calm voice and gentle demeanor brought comfort and peace wherever she was.

Love is not primarily a feeling, but true love is an action. Irene shared the depths of her love for her family and friends by her tireless actions. Whether she was cooking meals, baking goodies for her family, sharing coffee and a visit with a friend, taking her grandkids out to a restaurant or making midnight snacks for her kids her whole like was a testimony to her love for others.

And how could it be any other way? For having love for others was a natural outflowing of her faith and hope.

John 15:13 says that greater love has no man like this, that he lay down his life for his friends.

Romans 5:8 says But God demonstrated his own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.

Charlotte having accepted the free gift of salvation and being filled with the love of God naturally wanted to pass that love on and share it with others. I know that you will all agree that she did share the love of God so well and through her we all got a glimpse of the Fathers love for us.

Friends and family, it does not need to be Charlotte's faith alone, it does not need to be Irene’s hope alone, it does not need to be grandmas love alone. It was meant to be given away, shared and passed on for the good news is for all.

Romans 10:13 says everyone who will call upon the name of the lord shall be saved.

Friends and family today is the day of salvation, let the love of Jesus Christ free you and start living the life you were created to live. It is the life grandma lived in faith, hope and love all rooted in the person of Jesus Christ in whose loving arms Charlotte Irene Rice is now and forevermore resting.

Treasured grandmother of Seth (Loralee), Paul, Lee (Becky), Jessie-Rae, Christopher, Tianna (Mike), Jason, Mynn (Marcus) and Joshua. Loved Grandy to Jeremiah, Georgia, Isaac, Adelaide, Coulson, Alexander, Travis, Connor, September-Raye, Serenity, Shayla, Carter and Mia. Great great grandmother to Zayne-Joseph. Daughter of the late Ferd and Mildred Kaufman. Sister of the late Jean (late Melvin), Ron (Mary) and Karen (David). Predeceased by her inlaws Thelma & Paul, Jean and John, Coulson and Mary and Mervin and Betty. Irene will be remembered and missed by numerous nieces and nephews and her best friend Ellamae Walker.
