Gerald Edward McGuire

With deep sadness and immense gratitude for a life well-lived, the family announces the passing of Gerald (Gerry) McGuire Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, and community leader, on Monday, August 10, 2026.

Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Gerry's roots in the city ran deep and shaped his lifelong love for the community. He believed in the potential of the Sault and its people and worked tirelessly to help the city grow, thrive, and care for its residents.

Gerry was the beloved husband of Kaye Margaret McGuire, who predeceased him one year earlier on August 20, 2025. Together, Gerry and Kaye built a life centred on family, faith, education, and service.

He will be forever loved and remembered by his children, Gerry McGuire (Rosemary) and Kara Provenzano (Lucas); his grandchildren, Isabella, Patrick, and Lily McGuire, and Ronan, Ava, and Adam Provenzano; and his great-grandson, Kaleb. Brother of the late Tom McGuire (Louise), the late Gratia Husseini (Waleed), and the late Laura McGuire. Brother-in-law of Nancy Bruining (Henry), John Bumstead (late Penny), and Mary Stanaway (Brian). Survived by many much loved nieces and nephews. He is also remembered fondly by his former students, colleagues, and community members who were influenced by his leadership and kindness.

Gerry’s public service included six years on Sault Ste. Marie City Council as alderman from 1970 to 1976, where he was known for his integrity, thoughtfulness, and commitment to doing what was right for the community. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the Sault Ste. Marie Medal of Merit in 2003. His leadership extended beyond council chambers to boards and committees including the City Planning Board, Algoma Public Health Unit, Children’s Aid Society, and Community Living Algoma, where he worked for better services and support for families and vulnerable citizens.

Professionally, Gerry devoted his career to Sault College, where he held a number of roles before serving as President from May 1991 until his retirement in May 2002. Respected by students, staff, and colleagues alike for his fairness and steady, principled leadership, Gerry strengthened Sault College’s role as a gateway to opportunity and championed education as a means to better lives. In 1994, he was honoured as the first recipient of Lake Superior State University’s Kenneth J. Shouldice Achievement Award, recognizing his professional and personal accomplishments on both sides of the border.

Gerry’s impact at Sault College continues through various scholarships and awards including the Gerald & Kaye McGuire Scholarship, which supports students in pursuing their education and encourages involvement in student activities and community volunteerism. These awards reflect the values that Gerry and Kaye shared—a belief in education, service, and giving back.

Beyond his formal roles, Gerry was a man of integrity and kindness. He was steady, humble, and quietly generous, with a deep sense of responsibility to his family and his faith. Gerry loved a great time and had a wonderful sense of humour. He cherished time at St. Joe’s Island and loved nothing more than gathering with family and friends.

Gerry battled with his health for several years, doing so with grace, his concern for others, and a deep appreciation for the care he received. His strength in the face of illness will remain an enduring example to his family and all who knew him.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many healthcare professionals who cared for Gerry over the years, and to friends and neighbours who offered support, compassion, and companionship during his illnesses, especially over the last year after Kaye’s passing.

Visitation will be held at Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East, 705-759-2522) on Thursday, August 20, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Precious Blood Cathedral (778 Queen Street East) on Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:00 am with reception to follow.
