Grace Segerkvist, born June 14, 1938, in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, passed away at Sault Area Hospital on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the age of 88.
Grace began her working life as a telephone operator in Sioux Lookout and later made Sault Ste. Marie her home, where she spent most of her adult life.
Grace was sharp, practical, fiercely independent and never afraid to speak her mind. She believed everyone deserved to be treated with the same respect. She spoke easily with anyone and had little patience for nonsense. People valued her honesty, her practical outlook and the thoughtful life advice she was always willing to share.
She remained curious throughout her life. She followed world affairs, politics, finances, business and technology with genuine interest and could hold a conversation with anyone. She never stopped paying attention to the world around her and always wanted to know what was happening next.
Grace was deeply generous with her time. For many years, she worked tirelessly at the basement sales at Central United Church, helping raise money for the church. She also collected clothing, carefully washed and folded it, and delivered it to local schools for children who needed it. Grace never looked for recognition for helping others. She simply saw something that needed doing and did it.
She loved her trips to Nevada, especially visiting her sister Mavis and spending time at the ranch with family. She especially enjoyed her time with Gus (Nephew) and was always willing to lend a hand, whether organizing, cleaning the ranch house or simply making herself useful.
Grace will be deeply missed by her children, Leianne Williams and Dean Williams (Denine), and by her cherished grandchildren, Emily and Evan. She was always interested in what Emily and Evan were doing and took great pride in their lives and accomplishments. She also had a special place in her heart for Ellie, the family dog.
She was known to arrive just in time for a meal, enjoying the food, conversation and time together.
Grace was predeceased by her parents, Gustav and Vivian Segerkvist. Her Father immigrated from Sweden. Her mother was from Hudson Ontario, and passed away when Grace was still young, an experience that helped shape the strength and independence she carried throughout her life. She is survived by her sister, Mavis, of Wells, Nevada.
Dean will especially miss their daily conversations, shared advice, opinions and plenty of laughter. Grace had a wonderful sense of humour, and he loved making her laugh.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to Dr. Patterson and Sarah, RN, for their many years of care and support, as well as to Dr. Bowen, Dr Glassford and the nurses on 3C at Sault Area Hospital for their kindness and care during Grace’s final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held in December, with details to follow.
