The family would like to express their gratitude to Christine and Martine, Ingrid’s best friends. Thank you for the years of countless good times, support, memories and most importantly, lots of laughs.
Post-second world war, Ingrid and her family of 4 were survivors of displaced persons camps in Germany. As a family, they sailed to Canada under the sponsorship of Sir James Dunn. After a long journey, their ship had finally docked at Pier 21 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Anticipating a private villa in New Brunswick, instead wound up settling and working in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario where she began learning English from reading comic books. Until she married, Ingrid worked many different service jobs as a waitress and cleaner. Ingrid was a true caregiver, family meant everything to her. She was the rock of the family all while being a jack of all trades. Whether it was painting, carpentry, cooking, crafts or constructing a patio, so long as Ingrid put her mind to it, it was to be done.
As the true caregiver she was, her love extended beyond her family, friends and hobbies, she had a true love and deep respect for nature and animals. But she drew the line at frogs!
When she wasn’t kicking people’s butts in the various games that she loved playing, Ingrid found her peace by the water with a fishing rod in hand. She could out-fish anyone in her campout group.
Ingrid had a special love for music. Although she was not classically trained, like the jack of all trades she was, she was able to teach herself to play the piano, accordion and harmonica. As the life of the party, Ingrid loved to socialize, dance, attend costume parties and enjoy a drink or two (or more), but especially of Kraken Black Spiced Rum.
Ingrid was born with a green thumb and had a natural gift for gardening. Whether indoors or outdoors, she could make almost anything grow and thrive. If you stopped by for a visit, chances were you’d find her lovingly tending to her garden, surrounded by an array of vibrant plants that she cared for so deeply.
A special and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Mauno Kaihla Koti (Ontario Finnish Resthome) who cared so much for Ingrid during her time there, providing both comfort and dignity. Even during busy and challenging times, they always took the time to sit with her, attend to her needs, and offer kindness and compassion. Our family will always be deeply grateful for their care and dedication.
