Used to spend a lot of time together as my mom was the oldest and Joan and her brother Donald were the youngest of seven kids.
My brother and I spent our younger years (weekends and summers) thru high school on grandparent’s farm. Was the family gathering place when the grandkids were younger and continued when they sold the farm in 1980 or so and moved to a smaller piece of land.
My brother and I learned to ride bikes with the old hand me downs on the farm and Joan was always willing and ready to go for a ride to the Garden Hill or maybe even to the corner and back, or through the fields. Of course we would have the dogs and one or two other nieces and nephews .
If we weren’t busy helping with the farm chores (collecting eggs, feeding rabbits, shoveling manure, haying in the summer) we would be playing cards, many games of Monopoly, darts upstairs in the hallway, or badminton and hide and seek in the barn. I remember persuading the older uncles or Grandpa to take us to a swimming hole and get an ice cream cone at Pearson’s after haying in the summer.
In winter we used to go snow machining and one time I remember ending up at a school rink to skate and play hockey in -40 degrees C weather. Use to also get pulled on a toboggan behind the machines. We had great fun together. My brother and I got involved in cross country skiing in high school and Joan was soon to follow. We would break trails through the fields and bush. Never knew where we would end up and with a little persuasion Joan would give any trail a try.
Joan was not a serious partier, but always enjoyed gathering with the family. Christmas and New Years were special times. Joan could never wait to open her presents and if given the opportunity might snoop! I remember celebrating New years on the farm with Grandma and Joan (and Grandpa shaking his head) and a few other family members as word spread that Joan planned good parties. We brought in a few New Years together and had lots of good times with Joan.
Joan and I travelled to see my brother Dan after he graduated from University and started his working years. Flew to Thunder bay for a visit and then a few years later drove to Knoxville Tennessee.
I have been on the west coast (Victoria BC) since 1994, but never lost touch. I was fortunate to see Joan in mid-December when my wife (Jane) and I were home for a visit. I am glad to have these good memories and I hope it helps all of us to think of the good times we had with Aunt Joan.
