John Barry Fraser

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our forever cherished, John Barry Fraser "Bear", age 76, who passed away peacefully at home, exactly as he wished, after a long and courageous fight with cancer.

Barry was a one-of-a-kind man who lived life in his own way. He was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, and he loved his people more than words could ever express.

If you knew Barry, you probably knew where you could find him. In his prime, he loved spending time at the local bars along Queen Street. The Old Adanac, River Rock Café, O’Aces Bar and Grill, The New American, and Reggie’s were some of his favourite stops. You could usually find him there with a glass of draft in front of him. He loved the company, the stories, the laughs, and the familiar faces.

Queen Street was more than just a place Barry liked to spend his time — it was home. He spent many years living above Joe Sports on Queen Street, first with his mom and later with his brother, Roy. Those years in that little apartment held a very special place in his heart and were filled with memories he carried with him throughout his life.

Barry also loved cruising around downtown and taking rides on what he proudly called his “Harley” — his mobility scooter. He enjoyed getting out, seeing people, and never missing an opportunity to stop for a visit or share a laugh along the way

Barry was always ready for a dance, an old story, or an inappropriate joke at the most inappropriate time. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a way of making people laugh that will never be forgotten. Those who knew him will always have a story about him— and probably one they shouldn’t repeat at his funeral.

He is the son of the late Ruth McLeod and Duncan Fraser. He will be deeply missed by his children, Jennifer (Darin), Stella (Earl), and Eugene; his many grandchildren, Megan, Morgan (Luc), Dallas (Lacey), the late Jake, Maggie and Eddie. Cherished great-grandfather of many especially Joseph, Ellie, Aubrey and Carson. He is now reunited with his beloved mother and his brother, Roy.

A special thank you and heartfelt appreciation to Shirley, Barry’s very special friend. Your love, kindness, loyalty, and unwavering support meant so much to him and to our family. Thank you for being by his side, sharing in his laughter and stories, and bringing companionship and comfort throughout his journey. Your friendship was a true gift to him, and we will always be grateful for the special place you held in his heart and the love you showed him right until the end.

Though our hearts are broken by his passing, we take comfort in knowing that Barry’s long fight is finally over and that he was able to leave this world peacefully, at home, exactly as he wished.

His laughter, his stories, his dancing, his unforgettable jokes, and the love he gave so freely will live on in all of us.

A special thank you is extended to Dr. Buehner, the Nurses at ParaMed - special mention to Naomi, Michelle, Madeline and Marcy, also the PSW’s with Care Partners, and the wonderful staff at Queenstown I.D.A Drug Mart. To everyone who played a part in his care - your kindness, compassion, and support helped make it possible for Barry to remain comfortable at home, surrounded by the people and the familiar surroundings he loved, right until the end. Our family will be forever grateful for the care and dignity you gave him during such an important time.

In keeping with Barry’s memory, donations may be made (payable by cheque or online) to the SAHF - Cancer Care Fund in lieu of flowers.

A visitation will be held at Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. East 705-759-2522) on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm where family and friends are welcome to gather, share memories, and celebrate Barry’s life.

Rest peacefully, Grandpa.

You are loved more than you could ever know, and you will be missed more than words can say.
