Beloved husband of Stephanie Riel for 23 years. Loving father of Ashley (Joseph), Kyle (Hayleigh), Katie (Trevor), Katrina (David), Faith. Proud Papa Keira, Caleb, Bentley, Charley, Aydin, Carter, Payten, and Harley. Cherished son of Irene Gionette (Ned) and the late Wayne Laroue. Brother of Mike, Debbie and the late Janice Laroue. John will be missed and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Johnny spent over 30 years with Algoma Steel's Transportation Department, finishing his career as a dispatcher. He was proud of his work, proud of providing for his family, and proud of the reputation he earned through decades of dedication and hard work. His work ethic was one of his greatest gifts, and one he passed on to his children and grandchildren.
A man of few words, John often joked that he only had one feeling, and he didn't appreciate it being hurt. While he rarely spoke openly about his emotions, those closest to him knew the truth. He loved deeply, cared fiercely, and beneath his tough exterior was the biggest softy.
John enjoyed spontaneous road trips and had a habit of deciding, often without much notice, that it was time to go. Usually, Steph was along for the ride, though family members were occasionally recruited as well. More than once, they found themselves rolling into a random town hours from home simply because that's where John decided the day would take them.
John became a father figure to many. He shared his knowledge freely, took people under his wing, and was always willing to provide the tools, instructions, and supervision. He could tell you exactly how to do a job and exactly why you were doing it wrong, but don't expect him to do the work himself.
To coworkers, friends, and family, his nicknames became terms of endearment. At work, nearly everyone was "Double F," and if Johnny called you "donkey," you knew you held a special place in his heart.
Those who knew him best will remember his quiet strength, unwavering work ethic, wise advice, and the rare, soulful laugh that could light up a room when something truly struck him as funny.
