With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Margaret, in her 92nd year, on Monday, November 17, 2025 in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
She was the loved wife of the late Bert. Wonderful Mom to Drew Simpson (Lee) and Dr. Ann Liz Simpson (Mike). “Super-hero Granny/GMA/ Grandma Marg” to Carter, Palmer, Chandler, Maggie, and Alexa. She was the youngest sister of the late Elsie West, Peter Jones, Middie Larivière, Ken Jones and Bill Jones. Very special aunt of Roberta and Richard Barber. She will be missed and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was a woman whose spirit, determination, and boundless compassion shaped every life she touched. To say she was a champion of the underdog barely captures the force of who she was. From being the number one cheerleader in high school, she carried that same enthusiasm and fierce loyalty into motherhood and, later, into becoming the most devoted and protective grandmother. She defended us, encouraged us, promoted us, and believed in us—always. There was truly no one like her.
Marg began her career as a secretary, but destiny had bigger plans. When Sault College opened and hired experienced professionals to teach in the new Business program, she was selected to become an instructor. She proudly taught generations of young women the art and professionalism of being an executive assistant. In time, she realized that her students had more formal education than she did. Never one to stand still, and while raising two children deeply involved in extracurricular activities, she returned to Algoma University to complete her Bachelor of Arts—all while continuing to teach full-time.
Her hunger for learning and growth didn’t stop there. In 1985, she made the bold decision to move to Toronto to pursue her Master of Education with a specialization in Counselling. Upon returning to Sault Ste. Marie, she applied her skills with heart and purpose, finishing her professional journey as a dedicated Career Counsellor. Her students, colleagues, and clients remember her as someone who saw their potential long before they could see it themselves.
Marg’s generosity knew no limits. She went above and beyond for anyone lucky enough to be part of her ever-expanding circle—a circle that grew with every encounter, as she made friends wherever she went. She had an unfailing love of life and would have done anything within her power to help someone else.
One of her proudest accomplishments was the family cottage—her dream come true. In classic Marg fashion, she bought it on a May long weekend while Dad was off fishing. We toured the cottage, she fell in love, and with a little nudge, she put in an offer. When she got the call two days later saying she had won the bidding war, she famously said, “Is it okay if my husband sees it?” She did it her way—and we adored her for it.
Losing her first to Alzheimer’s and now to this final stage, leaves an enormous hole in our lives. Yet, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband, Bert. Marg’s legacy is one of courage, kindness, resilience, and love. Her spirit will continue to live on in all of us who were shaped, strengthened, and inspired by her.
A celebration of a life « well-lived » will take place in the summer of 2026. Following the service, family and friends will be invited to gather for a reception at a separate location. Memorial contributions (payable by cheque or online) to Special Olympics Canada would be greatly appreciated. https://www.specialolympics.ca/ways-to-give/
