He was born on May 29, 1945, to Svere "Jack" Mossing and Ingeborg "Jean" Eriksen in Simcoe, Ontario, a younger sibling to Gloria and Robert.
Butch grew up in Port Dover on Lake Erie and later attended Western University where he studied Honours Biology before graduating from medical school. After interning in Calgary, he spent two years in general practice before completing his surgical residency at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
He met his surviving wife Martha "Marty" (nee Gilbertson) when they were children. Marty and her brother Terry (Joan), grew up in Simcoe and their cousin Rob, was one of Butch’s best childhood friends. Butch knew early on that Marty was the love of his life.
Marty and Butch welcomed a daughter, Susan, in 1976, and later a son, Scott, in 1980. The family moved back to Ontario, choosing to settle in Sault Ste. Marie. He practiced in the Sault for over 40 years.
Butch loved learning and excelled in school. Combined with his thoughtful and humble nature, he was a meticulous and compassionate surgeon, dedicated to his patients and the ethics of his profession.
Outside the operating room he enjoyed skiing in the winter and spending time outdoors in the summer. This included trips to a cabin at Sand Lake, and later in life, many hours on the golf course, all with a wonderful group of lifelong friends. He was above all else, a student of life, curious to learn about everything from politics, to art, to philosophy – evidenced by his legendary book collection.
Once the kids were grown, he and Marty bought some land near St. Joseph’s Island and built a waterfront cottage that brought them great joy. A lover of nature, Butch enjoyed observing the cottage wildlife. Having had two dogs and a number of cats, he was a friend to all animals and would never miss an opportunity to pet a passing dog.
Butch was a loving father to Susan (Paul Brackstone) and Scott (Melissa Agnew), and a proud grandpa to Jack (18), Oscar (16) and Angus Brackstone (12), and Evelyn (10) and Declan (7) Mossing. Although Scott and Susan relocated to the West Coast, their families always looked forward to trips to the cottage or having Marty and Butch stay with them out west.
In Butch’s last days, his family took comfort in the quiet grace and courage he displayed knowing his end was near. In his words, he was very happy with his biography. And those who knew him and had the privilege to be loved or cared for by him, were lucky to be part of his story. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
True to his no-fuss nature, Butch did not want a funeral service.
