OLIPHANT, Muriel Joyce Frost - Died unexpectedly but peacefully in her home in Sault Ste. Marie, on Saturday, April 7, 2018 in the company of family. Born in Niagara Falls, February 24, 1923, daughter of the late Ethel and Stanley Frost. Beloved companion of the late Len for 71 years and wife for over 66 years. Loving mother of Leslie, Robert (Marco Fiola), Barbara (the late Oliver Jenkins) and Mary (Bob Tuck). Remembered as a wonderful grandmother, role model and friend by Hilary and Ian, and their father Graeme Connell, whose love and care for Muriel was unsurpassed. Predeceased by her siblings Dorothy (Jack Crawford), Gordon (Anna), Marion, Murray (Eileen), Elwood (Marguerite), Margaret (Joe Richardson) as well as Edgar, Elmer and Norman. Survived by her loving brother Stan Frost and his wife Jane. Remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews and their children. Muriel spent her early years in the Falls, moving to Toronto for high school where she met Len at Oakwood Collegiate. She maintained lifelong friendships from high school and from her early career in the insurance industry and in the stock brokerage business. During the war she supported Len in the RCAF in Charlottetown, PEI, and Chatham, New Brunswick and as he pursued his degree in Forestry at the University of Toronto. In 1949, they moved to Sault Ste. Marie, where they raised their family, built and maintained lasting friendships and created a caring neighbourhood on Florwin Drive. Muriel contributed endless hours to a variety of organizations throughout her life most notably the Canadian Cancer Society, Christmas Cheer, Central United Church and as a literacy volunteer. For decades her work on behalf of the Liberal Party was renowned. A life-long athlete, Muriel is remembered by many friends from badminton, cross-country skiing and golf circles, especially engaging young people in sports. The Leafs, Blue Jays, Raptors, Roger Federer and Jack Nicklaus have lost a devoted fan. Intellectually engaged, Muriel followed world events and politics daily, and was never without a current book. She will be missed by members of her bridge clubs and neighbours who were recipients of her generosity and hospitality. Friends are welcome to visit Wednesday, April 11, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at the Arthur Funeral Home - Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522). A celebration of Muriel's life will be held at Central United Church, 160 Spring Street on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 11 am. Donations in Muriel's memory may be made to Central United Church, the Liberal Party of Canada, The Algoma Conservatory of Music or a health charity of your choice.
