It is with deep sorrow and immense gratitude for a life “well lived” that we announce Don’s peaceful passing, at home with his wife, sons and brothers by his side.
Beloved husband of Anne (nee Figures) for 56 years. Loving father and role model to Dan (Sarah), Todd (Jennifer), and Rob (Ali Corbey). Proud grandfather of Nola, Peri, Ben, Mya, Will, and Emma. Dear brother of Jim Stewart (Beverly) and John Missere (Deborah) and dear brother-in-law of Sandra Hill (Ron) and Nancy Lapish (David). Special uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Don qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1972 and spent more than 50 years advising clients in Sault Ste. Marie and the surrounding area, initially at Tessier, Smith and Partners, and later BDO. After his retirement from BDO, Don spent several years working with the Algoma District Medical Group. Don cherished the many relationships he developed throughout his career, counting many clients and colleagues as lifelong friends.
A competitive golfer for many years, Don was well known for his golf success in and around Northern Ontario. He often commented on how golf provided him with an important source of confidence he lacked as a teenager, and he felt it was important to give back to the game that meant so much to him. This fueled a long-standing involvement in youth sports, serving in leadership positions across multiple local and regional organizations, including Sault Minor Hockey and the Northern Golf Association, among others. He was also a driving force in the building of the Crimson Ridge Golf Course which opened in 2002. In recognition of his accomplishments in golf, Don was inducted into the Sault Ste. Marie Sports Hall of Fame in 2016, a recognition he was both humbled and honored to receive.
To Don’s family and close friends, he will be remembered as loyal, honest, and hardworking, with a playful personality underlying a quiet exterior. He was immensely proud of the life he and Anne built together, and he enjoyed nothing more than spending quality time with family, particularly his grandchildren who brought him so much joy. Making their father proud will remain a primary motivation for Don’s three sons.
Special thanks to the many health professionals who provided care and support to Don and his family through some challenging times, including Stacey Grawbarger from Ontario Health atHome, Andrea and Lisa from Bayshore, Tunde from CarePartners, Drs. Jonusaitis and Buehner from the Group Health Center, Dr. Tien from Sault Area Hospital and Dr. Best. Your kindness and compassion made a difference. Thank you.
As per Don’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place at The Loft at the Algoma Conservatory (75 Huron Street, Sault Ste. Marie) on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions (payable by cheque or online) to A.R.C.H. or the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington Street East, 705-759-2522). Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.arthurfuneralhome.com for the Missere family.
