Richard Derek Mooney

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Rick on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 71.

Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Rick built a life around family, friends, hard work, laughter, and enjoying life on his own terms. Rick was the beloved son of the late William Thomas Mooney and late Nora Irene Mooney.

Rick is now reunited with his longtime partner, Francine Gauthier, who held a special place in his life and heart.

He was the proud father to Richard William Mooney (Jessica), Aaron Joseph Mooney (Tasha), and Jessica, and a very proud grandfather to Oliver.

Rick is survived by his siblings Eunice McClary (Bill), Cheryl Mooney, Norman Perham (Lynda), Maureen Raynor (late Lorne), and Keith Mooney (late Doris). He was predeceased by his siblings Colleen Lamming (late Wayne), Bradford Mooney (late Diane), Robert Mooney (Doris), and Brian Mooney. He was also a much-loved uncle to many, many nieces and a nephew or two, and part of a large extended family that gave him no shortage of people to visit, talk with, laugh with, and tell stories about.

After many years of working, Rick recently retired from F.H. Clergue Elementary School, where he became much more than an employee. To generations of students, he was simply “Uncle Mooney.” He genuinely enjoyed the kids, the staff, the conversations, the jokes, and being part of the school community. The number of people who knew him by that name says a lot about the impression he left behind.

Retirement gave Rick the opportunity to enjoy life at his own pace. He loved being social, spending time with family, catching up with old friends and making new ones. He could strike up a conversation, tell a story, share a laugh, and make himself at home pretty much anywhere.

Rick lived life the way he wanted to live it. He enjoyed the people around him, appreciated the simple things, and never needed much of an excuse for a good conversation or a laugh.

And, of course, there was Lucky, his faithful four-legged companion, who was right there with him until the end.

Those who knew Rick will remember him in different ways — as Dad, Grandpa, brother, uncle, Uncle Mooney, friend, coworker, or simply the guy who always had time to talk.

His family will remember the stories, the laughs, the lessons, the imperfections, the good times, and the countless little moments that made Rick, Rick.

At Rick's request, cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
