It is with profound love and sadness that we announce the passing of Rolland Joseph Nadjiwon, who journeyed to the Spirit World on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the age of 81.
A proud Potowatami man and member of Batchewana First Nation, Rolland maintained a deep connection to his home community of Cape Croker, his people, and their history and traditions.
A gifted storyteller, writer, poet, and educator, Rolland devoted much of his life to sharing knowledge, history, and Anishinaabe culture. His love of storytelling extended beyond his writing and teaching into everyday life, where he delighted in sharing stories about Cape Croker, family, and just about anything else.
Those who knew Rolland will fondly remember his quick wit, unmistakable charm, and mischievous sense of humour. His home was always filled with flourishing plants, treasured memorabilia, and a pot of hot coffee ready for visitors. He welcomed good conversation and especially enjoyed teasing his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Rolland was predeceased by his beloved wife, Carol Ann Nadjiwon; his cherished grandson, Antonio; his parents, Bernard and Catherine Nadjiwon; and his siblings Joseph, Peter, Paul, and Shirley.
He leaves behind his loving children, Trevor, Stephen (Sandra), Kevin, and Teala (Bob); grandchildren Olycia, Reanne, Chandra, Sage, Anuin, and Wahonay, Theresa baa,Troy baa, Cass, Jordon; and great-grandchildren Anevay, Azalia, Owen, Brent, Tyson baa, Samantha, Thomas, Colton, and Anthony.
He will also be lovingly remembered by his siblings Rose, Cathy, Bernadette, Bernard, Carol, and Keith, their spouses, his sister in law Sandy Blue Sky (Rick) and his many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
In his later years, Rolland lived with dementia. Although the disease gradually took away his ability to share his stories, it could never diminish the remarkable life he lived or the love he inspired in those who knew him.
The family extends special and heartfelt gratitude to his granddaughter Olycia, whose extraordinary compassion and nursing care brought Rolland comfort and dignity throughout his final days at the F. J. Davey Home. Special appreciation is also extended to his granddaughter Sage Moon for her loving presence, care, and support. Chi-miigwech to the staff and caregivers with special gratitude to nurses Mike and Sandra on Cedar 3 at the F. J. Davey Home where he resided since 2018.
Rolland’s legacy lives on through the stories he shared, the knowledge he passed down, and the laughter and love he brought to those around him.
We take comfort in knowing that he has completed his earthly journey and is reunited in the Spirit World with his beloved Carol Ann, his grandson Antonio, his Mom and Dad and the ancestors who journeyed before him.
Miigwech, Daddy, for the stories, the laughter, and the love. Your voice may be quiet, but your stories will continue through us.
