CANDIDO, Tranquilla (Gallio) -Tranquilla Gallio Candido passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the age of 99 years. She was predeceased by her husband Umberto, her son Sergio, her parents Sante and Teresa Gallio, her sisters Onorina and Celestina (Marchionni), and her brother Mario (Nives). Tranquilla will be deeply missed by her son Danilo (Sally) and her daughter-in-law Diane Candido, her grandchildren Tamara, Chris, Darick (Lisa), Paul (Mia), Cathy Rattray (Glenn) and Laura Deines (Brian), her great grand-children; Amanda O’Driscoll (Mark), Matthew and Gavin Rattray; Skylar, Tanya and Coulton Candido: Jerrod and Sydney Candido: Markus Deines and the late Bianca Deines, and great-great grand-daughters Emma and Kaillie O’Driscoll. They will all deeply miss their beloved Nonna. She will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews in Canada and Italy. Tranquilla Gallio was born on January 6, 1919 in the town of Bannia, in the province of Pordenone, Italy. The family that included her two older sisters (Onorina and Celestina) and her younger brother (Mario), were left destitute upon the death of the father (Sante) leaving the mother (Teresa) to raise the children with only the help of the dearly beloved grandfather Benigno. In 1931, at the age of 12, Tranquilla left Bannia to join her sisters to work as a servant girl in Rome to help support the family. In Rome, Tranquilla began to develop her tremendous skills as a cook and could transform any every-day meal into a memorable experience. Tranquilla returned to Bannia in 1940 to convalesce from serious lung infections where she met and married Umberto Candido on February 22, 1941. They were blessed with 2 sons Sergio and Danilo. The family endured the second world war years with many trials and dangers. In 1951 Tranquilla and the two sons joined Umberto who had settled in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada in 1949. The family moved into their new home on Carufel Avenue in the the Fall in 1951. They had many friends and extended family to enrich their lives. Tranquilla lived in that home for 63 years and moved to the F.J. Davey Home in January 2014. In the years that followed the two sons married and moved away from Sault Ste. Marie to other Canadian locations. In 1980 Tranquilla and Umberto experienced a devastating loss of their son Sergio. In 1993 following the tragic death of her husband Umberto, Tranquilla had the support of her nephew Dino (now deceased) who took on many chores in support of her independent living. Many friends and family were welcome to her home to share her delicious meals and desserts. Tranquilla had an open generous heart that she shared with everyone. She magnetically attracted the love of children whether they were grandchildren, nieces and nephews or friends. All received her special attention and love. There were many rooms in Tranquilla’s heart. The family owes a great debt of gratitude to Tranquilla’s nieces Debby Brogno and Glenda Candido, who took on the responsibility of caregivers in the absence of the immediate family. Friends are invited to visit at the Arthur Funeral Home – Barton & Kiteley Chapel (492 Wellington St. E. 705-759-2522) on Monday, March 5, 2018 from 9:30 am until 11:30 am. Funeral Mass to be held at St. Veronica’s Catholic Church at 12 pm. Rev. Ron Ambeault officiating. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations to be made to the F.J. Davey Home. The family is also appreciative for the respectful care given to Tranquilla by all staff at the F.J. Davey Home, especially those on the third floor Driftwoood Beach.
