James Henry George “Jim” Peters was born November 22, 1946, on the beautiful island of Montserrat, in the Leeward Islands, West Indies. The name George is the one commonly used by his family and now will be used as we move along with this obituary.
George had seven siblings: Philip Peters and Joseph Meade (in Montserrat), John Peters (who predeceased him), Richard Peters (in the United Kingdom), Patrick Lee (in Montreal), Winston Bramble-Peters and Theresa Peters (in the United States). George’s father and mother were Abraham Peters and Frances Ann Bramble-Peters, both who predeceased him. George is also survived by his three children--daughter Patricia “Patsy” Farrell-Daway (in Montserrat), and sons Howard and Terrance Peters as well as adopted son Cecil Riley (in Canada), all from his union with wife, Sarah (Dye) Riley of Harris’ Village, Montserrat, who predeceased him; his son-in-law Clifford Daway (in Tortola), grand children Nicole Farrell (in Florida) and Xavier Farrell (in Montserrat); great grandchild Jahcoy Nicholls (in Florida); and goddaughter Tamara Montgomery (in Canada). He is also survived by his second wife Leola (in Canada). George had several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws -- too numerous to mention – residing in various parts of the world. George also had many friends, including special friend Mary Farrell (in Florida).
Growing up with his siblings in Montserrat, George assumed the responsibility of making sure that whatever that was needed in the family circle gets done. He was very diligent in his approach to everything. One thing that was very noticeable in him is the importance he placed on the neat appearance of his surroundings. As far as he was concerned, there is a time and place for everything. This is a quality that lasted for his lifetime. George started his career as being a skilled craftsman in the construction industry, where at age 21 he engineered and constructed his first brick home, which was very impressive. He then got married and migrated to Canada, where he had a long career with the IBM Corporation with concentration on operations in the Caribbean. It was indicated that the company referred to George as a “go to guy” when they wanted things done, one who was very passionate about his role. These comments fully captured who he was known to be. His sister, being the only girl in the family, will tell you that George was very protective of her, making sure that she kept her head on her shoulders. She always welcomed his guidance and can say he was instrumental in her rethinking of certain things in her life. Their sister-brother relationship was a special one.
Though George has been taken home to be with our God, he will always remain in the hearts of his family and friends, for he has surely left a lasting impression. May his soul rest in eternal peace and rise in glory.
