James Joseph Sweeney

James (Jim) Joseph Sweeney of Markham, Ontario passed away peacefully on July 3, 2026. Born on February 17, 1934 in Toronto, he was the son of the late James and Madeleine Sweeney. Brother to Marlene LaPointe (predeceased) and Father Brian Sweeney (predeceased). Loving husband to Shirley (Kelly) (predeceased). Father to Kerry Szoldatits (Zoltan) and Patrick Sweeney (predeceased) (Leann). Proud grandfather of Ryan Szoldatits (Jennifer), Patrick Szoldatits, Jason and Dylan Sweeney and great grandfather to Sydney Szoldatits.

Jim went to St. Michael’s College School where he also played for their Junior B hockey team. He had a long distinguished career with Bell Canada starting as a lineman and retiring as the Director of Communications with Tele-Direct (Yellow Pages). After retirement he sat on the hospital board for the Rouge Valley Health System for several years. He was also actively involved with the Bereavement Committee, Knights of Columbus and St. Vincent de Paul at St.Patrick’s and with the Knights and Communion Ministry at Blessed Frederic Ozanam. He enjoyed sports, travel and time spent at the family cottage. He will be dearly missed by so many.

Visitation will take place at Paul O'Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. E, Scarborough, ON, M1R2Y8, CA, on July 7, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Parish, 5633 Highway 7, Markham, ON, L3P 1B6, CA, on July 8, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Entombment will take place at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 355 Taunton Rd E, Whitby, ON, L1R 3L4, CA
