John Bernard McReynolds passed away peacefully and surrounded by family in his 89th year after a prolonged struggle with dementia, on Thursday October 22, 2026, at Billings Court Manor Long Term Care Home. Born in Middlesex, England, in 1938 at the dawn of World War II, John was a rascal as a child. When his family immigrated to Vancouver, BC he taught his childhood friends rugby and cricket. He later attended UBC and became a high school teacher where he met his future wife, mother of his children, and love of his life, Joan. Shortly after their marriage in 1969, John somehow convinced a Chartered Accounting firm to hire him in his quest to become CA. He would go on to complete his CA and be transferred to Toronto after the birth of his sons David and Colin, becoming a senior partner in his firm. Later, John joined the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants where he was responsible for the dreaded Uniform Final Exam. Despite being despised by aspiring CA’s across the country before his retirement, his family was extremely proud of his incredible life journey.
John was an athlete from a young age. He later enjoyed skiing, golf, curling, racket sports, and telling childhood stories about his adventures in the bombed-out streets of London. Throughout his life John valued honesty, integrity, fairness, and hard work; values which he passed on to his boys. His kindness, even keel, and quick wit made him a dear friend and relative. Even in his final years as his memory faltered, he maintained his easy manner and was beloved by those who now cared for him. To know John was to find compassion and comfort. We are all better people for having him in our lives.
John was predeceased in 2003 by his wife Joan of 37 years. He is dearly missed by his son David and his wife Lesley and their daughters Megan and Erin; his son Colin and his wife Elaine and their daughter Sadie and son Finley; his twin sister Annie; his brother-in-law John and his wife Heather; his nephew Rob; his niece Lynn and her husband Danny and their daughters Michelle and Elayne.
Family and friends will be welcomed at Paul O’Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Avenue East, Scarborough, Ontario, on Saturday November 7, from 1:00pm-3:00pm followed by a celebration of life at 3:00pm.
