Margaret Mary Kearns Smith

Margaret was a wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and teacher. She was a devout Catholic whose faith was of immense importance and comfort. She will be especially remembered for her love of literature and her commitment to walking endlessly throughout her life. She found great joy in each of these devotions.

Born on May 31, 1928 in Copper Cliff, Ontario, Margaret was educated at Loretta Abbey in Toronto, and the University of St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto. She continued her post graduate doctoral work at Rosemont College outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In her later years Margaret became Head of the English department at Metro Preparatory Academy in Toronto and taught a range of subjects. She particularly loved teaching her granddaughter Glynn Taylor Leggat. Margaret counted those 10 years of teaching and mentoring as one of the most fulfilling stages in her life.

At 75 years of age Margaret moved to London, England to join her daughter Ann. and spent 14 happy years caring for her beloved granddaughter Poppy.

Margaret is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Taylor (Robert), her son Father George Smith C.S.B. and her daughters Ann Brookes and Martha Smith.

She was a loving grandmother to Glynn (John) Leggat, Clementine Taylor (Phil), Phillip (Whitney)Taylor, Georgia and Thomas Sluga and Poppy Brookes. She was gifted with 6 great grandchildren Jackson, Charlotte, Grey, Lauder, Harper and Rooney.

She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Marcella Kearns, her husband George Terrence Smith and her sisters Patricia (Paul) Phoenix and Helen (Paul) Lonergan.

Margaret’s family would like to extend much gratitude to the nursing staff, PSWs and the extraordinary staff of Presentation Manor. Each member has provided Margaret with dignity and compassionate care not only in her final 2 weeks but daily since her arrival in November of 2018.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026 at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel at Presentation Manor, 61 Fairfax Crescent, Scarborough.
