Mary Catherine Smith

Mary was born in Durham, Ontario and attended elementary school there. She went to Notre Dame High school in Waterdown, Ontario and trained as a nurse at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. She became a registered nurse in 1955 and worked in various places in Toronto, New York and Montreal before retiring in 1992. Aunt Mary spent her life caring for others both professionally as a nurse, and in her personal life through her devotion to her family. Whether it was caring for her aging mother or for her brother, sister, nieces and nephews, she was always there for us when we needed help. Although Mary never married or had children of her own, she was a ‘mother hen’ to her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed classical music-especially opera, and played piano and violin. Her Catholic faith was of utmost importance to her and she was always actively involved in the various parishes she attended. Mary will be sorely missed by her nieces and nephews: Edie Di Pede (Gino), Linda Whaling (Dennis), Joan Smith, Bill Rivard (Pat), Lisa Wiechers (Xavier) and David Rivard (Jodie) as well as her fifteen great nieces and nephews and nine great great nieces and nephews. She was blessed with many good friends both from her nursing days and in retirement at Presentation Manor. Many thanks to the caring team there who made her final years so comfortable and fulfilling. A funeral mass for Mary will be held on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Epiphany of Our Lord Parish, 3200 Pharmacy Avenue, Toronto, ON M1W 3J5.
