Paul James Smith

Paul James Smith, 76, of Don Mills, passed peacefully and without pain on Friday October 24th, 2025, at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, after a short and unexpected battle. Paul was born on August 21, 1949, to Marion Christina Hunter, in Toronto, Ontario. He graduated from York University in 1972 and in 1978, married Bonnie Lee Watson. In 1981, Bonnie and Paul welcomed one child, Christie Danielle (Chrissy). Though Paul and Bonnie didn’t remain married, they prioritized being a family and raising their only daughter together. In 1991, at the age of 42, Paul made the incredibly brave decision to change careers and become a primary school teacher. He received his teaching degree at the University of Toronto. Paul spent his entire career teaching at Ionview Public School in Scarborough, where he made an impact on so many children. Paul is survived by his daughter and best friend, Chrissy (Dolly), son in law, David, his two grandsons Carson and Maddox and his life partner, Georgia. Fondly remembered by Patrick and Prince. Paul was the proudest Papa who made it a priority to attend every one of his grandsons hockey games. He also loved a good ride on his sport bike and a glass of wine with his sweetheart, Georgia. Paul loved music, jazz and indie rock in particular. He was independent and confident; an energetic socialist and broad thinker. He loved the outdoors, the beach and all the intricacies the neighbourhoods of Toronto had to offer. He liked to explore and experience life to the fullest. Though often looked upon as a quiet man, he was actually a thrill seeker, fearless in his quest for adrenaline. He had a dry sense of humour and always enjoyed a good joke. Paul loved his life and has left this world far too soon. Paul and Chrissy’s bond, far surpassed father and daughter. They were friends, secret holders, endless supporters and each others favourite person. The void left by his loss, will forever change the heart of his precious Dolly. Paul was preceded in death by his parents Marion Christina Hunter and James Edward Smith.

A memorial visitation will be held on Monday November 3rd, 2025 at Paul O'Connor Funeral Home, 1939 Lawrence Ave. East, Scarborough from 1 p.m. until the time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at 3 p.m. Reception and drinks to follow at Joey Restaurant, Shops at Don Mills.
