Whenever I met her, she always had a kind smile that immediately put one at ease. I used to be absolutely delighted to meet her.

I will not forget how beautifully Mai sang for my wedding, how she took my husband, Amit to be her own grandson and shower all her love on him. 

Mai was a perfect woman, a perfect wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother. She showered all her love on her family and always got all of us together. Thank you Mai for always getting our family together, for get togethers, picnics or even otherwise. Along with being a wonderful grandmother, she was also a wonderful great grandmother. I can still picturise her getting into the doll house with my baby Marushka and play toys with her and each sitting with their own cooking sets n cooking for each other. 

Mai loved her gardening and loved saving the paddos to grow mango trees. Talking of mango trees, we (Mai, my mama n dada, Killy aunty, Fio, Sam n I) have plucked (stolen 🤭) so many mangos, chikoos and jackfruit’s in Goa. She always had fun and accompanied us on all our naughty adventures in Goa. 

Oh Mai!!! I can go on and on and on …

I am writing this today on my birthday Mai and I miss you even more, your blessings and love. Always be my guardian angel ok 👼

Mogal Mai, aamka tuzo ugdas sodhanch yetolo.

‘Vodlee jaa’ this is a blessing all of us got from Mai, and it was such a proud and happy moment when we got this blessing from her. 

I was lucky to be looked after by Mai since the day I was born. I got to spend my entire childhood under her gentle care and love. Her teaching me to play 5 stones, playing with our chickens at khirkee house, making me nap in the afternoons saying that if I don’t do so budaman will come n take me, grinding together with a stone mehendi (henna) leaves from the garden n applying it for each other, enjoying the hot chapatis she used to make for us with chao (tea) and most importantly her not letting anyone shout at me … yes, I was pampered a lot by her. 

Not only did I enjoy eating the tasty food - sorpotel, potato chops, dal, turai bhaji, fish curry, meat curry but I also learnt to cook the same. I will never forget her feeding me rice with fried fish oil and fried fish at the end of every meal. And her sharing her piece of fish with us for whoever could finish her portion of food which she couldn’t finish. 

I will always cherish our trips to Goa, playing at the beach and her posing with her dark glasses and straw hats. Talking of photography, she loved being clicked, especially with flowers and was ready to change her sarees one after another only for pictures. She loved posing.

Mai, you did so much for us and our kids, surrounded us with so much love and always instilled in us to have our focus  on Jesus and Mumma Mary.  Thanks for this blessing of being able to care for you and your presence in our lives.  Your continuous prayers for us.   We will always remember your constant repetition of “Besanv ghalun tujer, Miracle kaurun tujer”. Love you so much Mai.  We will miss you.

Food is at the heart of so many of my fondest memories of Mai.

When I was little, I would slip chapatis out the window to feed the dogs, and she would beam, thinking I was polishing off stacks—so she kept making those ghee chapatis just for me. 
If Mom fried fish, Mai would quietly pick out every tiny bone so I didn’t have to get my hands dirty. 
At Christmas, she would make us sit for hours, to make more than 500 neureos, fully aware they would last until March because only Mom and Dad really ate them. 
She even saved every fruit seed with the absolute determination of growing mangoes in Canada.
These days, Mai, I think of you every time I reheat my tea and forget it, only to start over again. 

I hope you know that we carry you with us in all the small, everyday moments — in the lessons you shared, the habits and flavours that remind us of you, and in the quiet strength, determination, and love you instilled in us.

As you watch over and guide us, just as you always do, I picture you cozy and content, sipping your chai at the perfect temperature from your chotu cup.

Being there for each one irrespective of our personal indifferences....We will continue following this teaching for the rest of our lives.....
