It's hard to put into words just how incredible Sam was. He was loving, kind, loyal, energetic, funny, athletic, and one of the most caring people you could ever meet. He had a bright smile that could light up any room and a presence that naturally drew people in.
Sam was remarkably intelligent - often the smartest person in the room - and with his quick wit and perfectly timed jokes, he wasn't above letting everyone else know it. He had an incredible sense of humour, an infectious laugh, and a way of making even ordinary moments unforgettable. Beneath his confidence was a deeply compassionate heart. He showed up for the people he loved without hesitation, rarely letting others see how much he was quietly carrying himself.
Fitness was one of Sam's greatest passions, and you could often find him chasing his next "gains" at the gym. He loved all things athletic, but few pursuits brought him more pride than karate and mixed martial arts. The discipline, determination, and resilience those sports demanded reflected so much of who Sam was, and he took immense pride in the skill he developed through years of dedication.
Sam shared an especially close bond with his mother, Kathy, whose love, guidance, and unwavering support helped shape the compassionate, thoughtful, and caring young man he became. Their connection was profound, and the love they shared remained a constant source of strength throughout his life.
Though Kathy passed before him, her love never left him, and those who knew Sam could see her influence reflected in the kindness and compassion he showed others. His friends were a constant source of support, especially through the hardest year - the terminal illness and loss of his mother, Kathy. Sam was her primary caregiver, steadfast, kind, perceptive and tireless.
He was a devoted brother to Virginia and Rachel, and they loved him just as fiercely in return. Like most siblings, they shared laughter, disagreements, adventures, and countless ordinary moments that became extraordinary simply because they experienced them together. Their bond was built on love, loyalty, and a lifetime of shared memories that his sisters will cherish forever.
Sam and his sister Virginia had a particularly close bond. Sam was a compassionate listener, beginning in his early days huddled around his sisters listening to their favourite bedtime stories. As they grew older, Virginia always knew she could turn to Sam, whose compassionate nature and ability to listen without judgment made him a constant source of comfort and support. They cherished the time they spent together, and their deep connection remained one of the defining relationships in Sam’s life.
Sam is also deeply mourned by his father, Stephen. Their relationship had its challenges, but deep beneath it all was love that needed few words. Stephen will forever cherish the memories they created together.
Sam was blessed with grandparents who played an enormous role in his life. He treasured the time he spent with his grandfather, John Kendall, whose wisdom, conversation, and quiet presence meant the world to him. Their conversations often lasted for hours, and Sam genuinely loved listening, learning, and simply being in his grandfather's company. He also adored his grandmother, Gail, affectionately known to everyone as "Gran." Her love, encouragement, and unwavering support were constants throughout his life, and the time they shared became some of his most treasured memories.
He also cherished every moment spent at June and Edward Ksiazek’s (Nana and Papa's) cottage in Muskoka. Summers were filled with boating, swimming, waterskiing, and endless days on the lake. Winters brought snowmobiles, fresh snow, and adventures that became some of the happiest memories of his childhood. Time at the cottage surrounded by family remained one of the greatest joys of his life.
Friendship was one of the defining gifts of Sam's life. From childhood through his final days, he formed deep and lasting friendships wherever he went. In the final years of his life, Sam began a deeply personal journey of faith. Through his church community, he found some of the most meaningful friendships he would ever know. His friends became a constant source of encouragement, support, laughter, and companionship. Sam was deeply loved by many, and he treasured those friendships more than words could express.
At just twenty years old, Sam had a lifetime of dreams still ahead of him. He loved to travel and looked forward to seeing more of this beautiful world. Though his journey was far too short, his passions, his dreams, and the love he shared will continue to live on through his family, his friends, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
If you knew Sam, we hope you will remember him not for how he died, but for how he lived - with kindness, courage, curiosity, compassion, loyalty, and a heart that was always open to others.
We invite everyone whose life was touched by Sam to join our family in celebrating the remarkable young man he was and the far-too-brief twenty years we were blessed to share with him. Come with your stories, your laughter, your tears, and your memories. Help us remember the life Sam lived, the love he gave, and the joy he brought to so many.
