Fr. John Stuart Sandberg was born to Josephine (Larkin) Sandberg and Oscar Gustav Sandberg on Sept. 30, 1938, in Mount Vernon, NY. And passed Nov 24, 2025, from complications due to Parkinson's and Metastatic Melanoma.
Stuart (as most of us knew him) attended grammar school and High School in Scarsdale and is a graduate of Dartmouth College. Following his graduation from Dartmouth, Stuart lived and volunteered at the Catholic Worker in New York City – discerning there his call to the priesthood.
Stuart attended the Catholic University of America and received a Master of Divinity while living in a religious house of study in Washington, DC with his mentor Fr. Virginio Zeroli. He was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1968 into the Company of St. Paul (a lay and religious order centered in Milan, Italy).
Fr. Stuart served as a parish priest at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Scarsdale, N.Y. from 1974 thru 1988. While at IHM Stuart was a spiritual guide and director to many parish parishioners and members of the wider community.
Beginning in 1988 Fr. Stuart founded the Siloam Cooperative, a house of hospitality and learning in White Plains, NY where he pastored many of its residents and spiritual seekers until its closure in 2022.
Stuart was known and respected by many friends and fellow spiritual seekers as a passionate voice for religious faith and commitment, dignity of all humans, radical inclusion… and the importance of good food and vitamins to stay healthy so one could follow and wholeheartedly serve Jesus, the Christ.
As a member of The Company of St. Paul, Stuart was passionate about the words and leadership of St. Paul and often quoted him by saying: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away, behold, the new has come”, (a shift in values and behaviors aligned with God’s will.)
Stuart is survived by his sister, Annie Sandberg Hisle, her husband John Hisle and by his nieces Christine Hisle Kenny and Beth Hisle Gorman and by his two nephews Peter Hisle and David Hisle and by 8 grandnieces and grandnephews: Sarah, Ken, Katie, Jack, Will, Anna, Sofia and Collins, as well as his cousin Mary Bergin Bradford…and Dotty and Dennis Meehan, Rosemary Camas and other devoted friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary at a later date.
