Julio Wenceslao Motal was born on November 20th, 1940 in the city of Brno, Czechoslovakia. In 1949, he escaped the communist rule of the Eastern Bloc and crossed the border into Austria. The family sailed to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he spent his formative years learning Spanish, riding horses, and exploring the countryside. After nearly a decade in South America, he immigrated to NYC to help his father restart the family business: Motal Custom Darkrooms.
New York would become his new home and the United States became his new country. Although he assimilated to America, he never lost his Czech roots. Julio was a proactive, competent, doer, and analytical thinker who set countless goals which he always accomplished. He was an individual through and through who didn’t feel the need to abide by social norms. This confidence and individualism helped him tick off countless bucket list objectives. He was an entrepreneur who built businesses. He sailed across the Atlantic Ocean over a 45-day span. He had four children and four grandchildren and was a loving Husband. Not to mention he was a sudoku master. Later in life, he took up cooking and shared his wonderful meals with family and friends.
Julio valued hard work and critical thinking. He was an intelligent person yet was deeply humble and modest about his accomplishments. While running Foto Motal he employed many people from all over the world with countless backgrounds. His generosity towards his family and friends was felt by many. Throughout his life, he always gave to others, without ever expecting anything in return. He was truly a selfless and loving man who will be greatly missed.
