Bob’s life was characterized by warmth, generosity, and a deep loyalty to those he loved. He greeted everyone with a smile and twinkle in his eyes, a friendly word and genuine goodwill. He faced many difficult challenges during his life, meeting them with equal parts grit, determination, faith, humility and humor. No one was exempt from his charm, optimism and kindness.
Born in White Plains on July 26, 1928 to the late Dr. Charles Henry Stimpson and Marian Gregory Stimpson, Bob graduated from Hartwick College in 1957, and served as a Corporal with the US Army Corps of Engineers in Japan during the Korean War. He married the late Catharine P. Stimpson (Pat) in 1956, and their marriage of 48 years was a celebration of love, family, community, and faith. Their life was centered in Scarsdale, NY, where together they raised their children Robert Stimpson Jr, Madeleine Melkonian (John), and the late Christopher Stimpson. His greatest joy was his family, and he delighted in his grandchildren Michael, Katherine (Katie), and Matthew Melkonian. The adoration was mutual, and their beloved “Oom-pah-pah” will be sorely missed.
Bob was a devout Catholic and devoted parishioner of Immaculate Mary Church for over 50 years. He served as a trustee, Eucharistic Minister, Leader of Song, led the parish Cardinal’s Appeal, and could be found in the rectory each Sunday counting the collection for many years. He supported numerous charities, particularly ones committed to those serving the sick in health and spirit, the orphaned and abandoned, and the poor. He served the Arthur Manor Association, the Scarsdale Town Club, and coached softball. He spent his career in merchandising, working for Frederick Atkins Wholesale Corporation for many years until his retirement.
In addition to his children and grandchildren, Bob is survived by his brother Rev. Peter Stimpson and his wife Lauren, his sister Maureen Cobb, and ten nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Florence Downs and brother Charles Stimpson, and his stepmother Ina Stimpson.
