Elizabeth M. (Cate) Johndrow – 94, longtime Scituate resident, formerly of Watertown and Newton Centre passed away peacefully on January 21, 2019. She was the beloved wife of the late George W. “Bill” Johndrow, Jr., with whom she shared more than 50 years of marriage.
The daughter of the late Malcolm and Helen (Williams) Cate, Betty attended Watertown Public Schools and was a 1941 graduate of Watertown High School, where she was a class officer and played on the varsity tennis team. During this time she worked at the library and on the city playgrounds. She went on to earn a B.S. in Education from Bridgewater Teacher’s College in 1946 and taught Kindergarten and first grade at the old Pierce School on Chestnut Street in West Newton.
She and Bill married on Dec. 3, 1949 at St. John’s Methodist Church in Watertown and her vocation grew to encompass the raising of her children. She was very active in Brownies and Cub Scouts and was a home room mother, school library volunteer and a Sunday school teacher at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church in Scituate. She also volunteered for Scituate Etrusco. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, bowling, cross word puzzles and playing cards.
She was the devoted mother of Leslie Johndrow of Scituate, Steven Johndrow of Littleton, CO, William Johndrow of Scituate and Richard Johndrow and his wife Sheilagh of Flower Mound, TX. Cherished grandmother of Bill, Sarah and Mathew. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by her siblings Gordon Cate and Malcolm Cate, Jr.
A visitation will take place on Saturday. January 26, 2019 from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Richardson-Gaffey Funeral Home, 382 First Parish Road, Scituate. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. The family will honor her with a graveside service and interment privately, when she will be laid to rest beside her dear late husband.
